Public schools have had a tough go in the last few years, much of it related to the pandemic and responses to it. But sometimes, the problems with public schools are entirely self-inflicted and utterly baffling.
Consider the school districts getting rid of honors classes in the name of equity. The reasoning behind the moves is that honors classes reinforce existing socio-economic disparities.
Naturally, parents are not amused. As The Wall Street Journal reports, the educrats are all-in on the idea:
In Santa Monica, Calif., high school English teachers said last year they had “a moral imperative” to eliminate honors English classes that they viewed as perpetuating inequality. The teachers studied the issue for a year and a half, a district representative said.
“This is not a social experiment,” board member Jon Kean said at a meeting last spring. “This is a sound pedagogical approach to education.”
If that means “creating incentives for parents to put their kids in private or other alternative schools,” then yes, it is a sound approach to education.
Economic education…specifically in how market forces work to reward those who innovate and punish those who stagnate.
But in some places, schools have quickly walked back their experiments in the face of parental opposition. That’s a good thing. What would be even better? More parents realize that government schools are subject to an array of forces, many of which tend toward mediocrity.
Alternatives exist – many of which gained popularity during the COVID closures.

Sorry but the bastardization of the public education system has been going on for decades. When nothing happened to stop it in the beginning the left just kept escalating the process. First step should be eliminating the DOE then next start pulling funding to the schools pushing insane agendas.
It would seem that progressives are bent on eliminating excellence and true competition in the public school systems. Of course, they often send their offspring to elite institutions. This is meant to create a large surf class ruled by small elite dynasties.
