For the first time, a Canadian prime minister has invoked the Emergencies Act — all to end the Freedom Convoy protest.

The never before used Act allows for the temporary suspension of civil liberties, including the right to assembly, travel and use of specific property.
As BBC News reports:
Law enforcement on Sunday re-opened the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor – a critical crossing for Canada-US trade – after a week-long standstill. But in Ottawa, hundreds of demonstrators have begun their third week of occupation around the city’s Parliament Hill.
What Scenarios Was the Emergencies Act Created For?
The situation must meet a high bar, specifically an “urgent and critical situation” that “seriously endangers the lives, health or safety of Canadians”.
And Cabinet may only invoke the legislation if the emergency cannot be addressed by any existing federal law and if it exceeds the capacity of the provinces to handle it effectively.
The Act outlines four kinds of emergencies justifying its use. They are “espionage or sabotage; foreign-influenced activities; threats or use of acts of serious violence for political, religious or ideological objectives; and covert, unlawful acts intended to undermine or overthrow the constitutionally established government.” (RELATED: Freedom Convoy Car-ramming Suspect Identified as Antifa Member)
According to the BBC, none of these have manifested in Ottawa.
Nevertheless, Trudeau and his allies are forging ahead. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said that the government will broaden “Terrorist Financing” rules to cover crowdfunding platforms to the Freedom Convoy.
With Trudeau at her side, Freeland said, “as of today, a bank or other financial service provider will be able to immediately freeze or suspend an account without a court order.”
