There is an old trick in argument, and it works by choosing the finish line before the race is run. You define victory as something your opponent was never trying to do, you note that he did not do it, and you call his failure to do it your triumph. This is the move at the heart of “Iran’s New Grand Strategy,” the Foreign Affairs essay published on June 3 by Narges Bajoghli and Vali Nasr. The authors observe that the Islamic Republic did not collapse under U.S. and Israeli bombardment, that no.

FRIDAY PDB – Pentagon UFO chief says alien mothership in our solar system possible. There is a possibility that extraterrestrial motherships and smaller probes may be visiting planets in our solar system, the head of the Pentagon’s unidentified aerial phenomena research office noted in a report draft shared Tuesday.

“[A]n artificial interstellar object could potentially be a parent craft that releases many small probes during its close passage to Earth, an operational construct not too dissimilar from NASA missions,” Sean Kirkpatrick, director of the Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, wrote in a research report co-authored by Abraham Loeb, chairman of Harvard University’s astronomy department.

The research paper — titled “Physical Constraints on Unidentified Aerial Phenomena” — comes following a month of intense scrutiny of unidentified flying objects, a stirring trend ignited when a Chinese spy balloon captivated the nation by drifting across U.S. airspace.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY – Here’s a roundup of other developing stories.

Not the President’s Daily Brief, but almost as good – PAUL’S DAILY BRIEFING – the PDB:

PENTAGON WOKE WATCH

OF COURSE, THEY WILL DO THAT – BUT THEY ARE INCREASINGLY POLITICIZED – OR MORE ACCURATELY – ‘IDEOLOGIZED’ – US military leaders push back at Republican assertions force is being politicized by “woke” initiatives that the lawmakers claim are hurting recruitment and distracting from the military’s mission.

SANITY AT LAST – Beards don’t belong in the military, senior enlisted adviser says. Airmen and other service members clamoring for the right to grow a beard had their hopes crushed by the military’s top enlisted adviser, who called the issue a waste of time during a recent video.

NATIONAL SECURITY

DOD DOESN’T BUY SPY AGENCIES’ ASSESSMENT THAT HAVANA SYNDROME IS ‘NOT CAUSED BY A WEAPON’ – The Pentagon is funding experiments on animals to recreate ‘Havana Syndrome.’ The testing looks to see if directed energy on ferrets can replicate the mysterious ailment suffered by U.S. personnel.

CHINA THREAT

Nuclear submarine plan aims to give Australia strategic edge to deter China. Australian nuclear submarines are key to defending the country’s 36,000 kilometers of coastline and maintaining an edge against China, whose growing military presence means conflict can erupt without notice.

Inside Indo-Pacific Command’s $87 billion wish list to deter China. The Command has outlined new spending requirements to boost deterrence against China, including billions of dollars in new weapons, new construction and closer military-to-military collaboration with America’s allies in the region.

Chinese rocket that delivered military spy satellites breaks up over Texas. The second stage of a Chinese rocket that delivered a trio of military surveillance satellites in June disintegrated over Texas on Wednesday.

RUBBER STAMP – Xi Jinping secures unprecedented third term as China’s ‘president’ in ceremonial vote. His position was officially endorsed by the country’s political elite on Friday, solidifying his control and making Xi the longest-serving head of state of Communist China since its founding in 1949.

RUSSIA THREAT – UKRAINE WAR

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 380. Russia launched a huge wave of missile attacks across Ukraine, killing at least six civilians, three of them in the southern city of Kherson, and cutting power to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

Zelensky pushes for more US aid as Russia pressures Bakhmut. The Ukrainian president is pushing for more security assistance from the U.S. and western allies as his troops face an immense assault from Russian forces in the embattled town of Bakhmut.

NORTH KOREA THREAT

North Korea fires ballistic missile toward sea, Seoul says. The launch came as the U.S. and South Korea prepare to hold their biggest combined military training exercises in years next week.

North Korean leader supervises troops simulating attack on South. Kim Jong Un has supervised a live-fire artillery drill simulating an attack on a South Korean airfield.

IRAN THREAT

Defense Secretary Austin’s visit to Israel reveals divisions on Iran. Austin discussed Iran’s nuclear ambitions with his Israeli counterpart on a visit to the country.

BIDEN PLAYS NICE WITH IRAN AS AMERICANS SUFFER INSIDE – Jailed American appeals to Biden in unprecedented interview from Iran’s most notorious prison. Iran’s longest-held American prisoner has made an emotional plea to Biden to put the “liberty of innocent Americans above politics” and ramp up efforts to secure his release, in an interview inside Iran’s Evin prison.

SPACE THREAT

Pentagon wants to ensure SpaceX doesn’t abandon them in war. Spooked by the company’s new limits in Ukraine, military leaders are mulling new types of contracts.

SpaceX mission may herald era of low-cost, reliable space transport. The Pentagon’s interest in using space launch vehicles to quickly transport cargo and personnel around the globe has its origins in the space race of the 1950s, though, until now, the concept was out of reach.

Boeing sees Space Launch System (SLS) rocket fit for Pentagon missions. Boeing wants to offer its gigantic SLS rocket for an upcoming U.S. military launch procurement program potentially worth billions of dollars, signaling a new strategy for a rocket once exclusive to NASA missions.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

Mexico rebukes GOP push to deploy US military on cartels across border as threat to Mexican sovereignty. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) pushed back against Republican lawmakers who had called on Biden to take military action against drug cartels across the border following the killings of two Americans in Matamoros.

Gulf nations summon sea drones to curb illicit trafficking. Gulf Cooperation Council countries plan to expand the multinational fleet of unmanned surface vessels in the Middle East, possibly tripling their situational awareness in countering drug and arms trafficking, according to the U.S. Navy.

US MILITARY

GO COASTIES – Adm. Linda Fagan calls for continued Coast Guard investment to meet homeland, global demands. With demands for its presence overseas and home and its missions on the rise, the Coast Guard continues to transform itself to meet missions at home and overseas and adapt to recruit a high-tech workforce, says the service’s top officer.

Navy won’t buy any more San Antonio amphibs in the next five years. The 2024 defense budget request will not seek to buy any San Antonio-class amphibious warships in the next five years, exposing a continued fissure between Pentagon and Marine Corps priorities.

Troops would see biggest pay raise since 2002 under new budget plan. The defense budget proposal also includes increased support for military families and continued implementation of military sexual assault prevention and response reforms.
