Arizona Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego is launching an effort to challenge a new Trump Administration immigration policy that could require many green card applicants to leave the United States and complete the process abroad.

According to a report from The Hill, Gallego is not only seeking to overturn the policy itself but is also pursuing a procedural strategy that could make it easier for Congress to reverse the change.

The dispute revolves around a recent U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) policy affecting how certain immigrants obtain lawful permanent residency.

WEDNESDAY PDB – We can’t do it alone. US, Australia to hold largest-ever Talisman Sabre military drills this summer. The biennial military exercise returns to pre-pandemic scale this year with more than twice the troops than took part two years ago.

B-1B Bombers fight with and against Indian air force in historic first. U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancers are taking part in the famed Cope India air combat exercise.

AND HERE AT HOME – Camp Pendleton Marine base hosts Indonesian Marines for joint training exercise. Protecting free trade and supply lines takes partnerships, even when those partners are on the other side of the world.

MEANWHILE IN EUROPE – Sweden announces arrival of US Marines taking part in huge NATO partner exercise. The Marines crossed the Norwegian border into Sweden on Tuesday to join one of Scandinavia’s largest military drills in decades.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY – Here’s a roundup of other developing stories.

Not the President’s Daily Brief, but almost as good – PAUL’S DAILY BRIEFING – the PDB:

PENTAGON WOKE WATCH

FOR PETE’S SAKE STOP ENABLING MENTAL ILLNESS! – Admiral defends non-binary officer against attacks from GOP lawmakers. This month, Lt. j.g. Audrey Knutson described participating in an LGBTQ spoken word night and sharing a personally written poem with the ship.

NATIONAL SECURITY

Air Force base in document leaks case loses intel mission. The service is investigating how a lone airman could access and distribute hundreds of highly classified documents and taken away the intelligence mission from the base where the leaks took place.

US military strategy in Indo-Pacific on track despite ‘disgraceful’ intel leaks, Pentagon official says. The recent leak of classified intelligence documents will not affect the U.S. military’s strategy in the Indo-Pacific as it calms allied countries in a region dominated by China.

HOMELAND SECURITY

The FBI called me: Meet Aric Toler, the Bellingcat sleuth who helped The NYT find suspected Pentagon leaker. The Times publicly identified the man believed to have leaked intelligence documents before law enforcement did. Toler helped the paper—and dodged a meeting with the FBI. “They’re probably listening to me right now,” he said.

US charges four Americans with aiding Kremlin efforts. A new indictment expands charges in an alleged Russian political influence operation in Florida and Missouri.

CHINA THREAT

China shows ‘concerning lack of interest’ in talks, DoD says. There is growing concern about the lack of communication between Chinese and American militaries in light of increasingly aggressive actions by Beijing.

Pentagon: yes, we are still lagging behind China’s hypersonics. House members grilled Pentagon leaders on why the U.S. military continues to lag behind China in developing hypersonic missiles and defenses that can counter the next-generation ordnance.

China readies supersonic spy drone unit, leaked document says. China’s cutting-edge drone could give it a surveillance advantage during a possible military confrontation over Taiwan.

In Taiwan, friends are starting to turn against each other. A friend in Taipei recently wrote a passionate Facebook post urging young people in Taiwan to prepare for war with China. The only way to respond to Chinese threats to seize the island was, he said, with strength; anything else was a delusion.

RUSSIA THREAT – UKRAINE WAR

STRIKING MUSK’S STARLINK – Russia unveils secretive weapon to target SpaceX’s Starlink in Ukraine. Moscow’s bid to sever Ukrainian forces’ internet access is more sophisticated than previously known.

US warns Russia not to touch sensitive American nuclear technology at Ukrainian nuclear plant. EMPTY THREAT?

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 420. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Ukrainian troops in eastern Ukraine, while Russian leader Vladimir Putin visited military headquarters in Ukraine’s Kherson and Luhansk regions. Russia claimed to have annexed the partly occupied areas in September.

Are US special operations forces in Ukraine? Yes, but not in combat. The presence of special operators at the embassy in Ukraine was first revealed by leaked documents.

South Korea opens door for possible military aid to Ukraine. It might go beyond humanitarian and economic aid if Ukraine comes under a large-scale civilian attack, the president said, signaling a shift in his stance against arming Ukraine for the first time.

NORTH KOREA THREAT

North Korea set to launch military spy satellite. Leader Kim Jong Un says the advance will help the country get real-time information on adversaries.

IRAN THREAT

See what Iran showed off at its military parade. Iran’s leader reiterated threats against Israel during annual Army Day, though he avoided criticizing Saudi Arabia as Tehran seeks a détente with the kingdom.

SPACE THREAT

Classified, ‘substantial’ new military space capability should be online by 2026: Space Force chief. The Pentagon expects to have a new, “substantial,” potentially offensive, classified capability in space by 2026.

Space Force sees increase in foreign military sales requests. As countries look to strengthen their space capabilities, the Pentagon is fielding more requests to export satellites and other capabilities.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

OUR SOUTHERN NEIGHBOR IS BECOMING MORE AUTOCRATIC – Mexico court: National Guard shift to army unconstitutional. The Supreme Court ruled that last year’s transfer of the newly created National Guard from civilian to military control was unconstitutional, dealing a blow to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador who created the security force in 2019.

US MILITARY

BUT CHINA KEEPS BUILDING – Navy long-range plan shows minimal growth in many warship programs. The Navy’s fleet would never reach the statutorily required 355 ships under two of the three scenarios outlined in the service’s latest long-range shipbuilding plan.

What Air Force combat controllers go through to earn their titles. They don’t just give it away.
