The greatest political landslide winner in presidential history is Warren G. Harding in 1920. While Harding is remembered today, if at all, for the scandals of his administration, overlooked is the appeal he had at the time with the American people. Harding won the 1920 election with a simple appeal of ‘a return to normalcy’ and a front porch campaign. Americans were ready for normalcy after the tumultuous years of World War I and the polarizing progressive era of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. They longed for the seemingly simpler era of William McKinley. Harding largely kept his promise with a conservative administration that often reached across the aisle and lowered the political rhetoric. His successor, Calvin Coolidge continued Harding’s policy of normalcy.
One hundred years later, Democrats ran Joe Biden for president as ‘Plain Joe from Scranton.’ He was the adult in the room who would lower the political rhetoric in contrast to Donald Trump’s tweets, they claimed. He would unite the nation and be a moderate Democrat. After what they claimed as the chaos of the Trump administration, Biden would bring America back to a simpler era of politics, as seen during the Obama and even Clinton years. They even copied Harding’s front porch campaign by having Biden campaign in the basement.
Alas, Joe Biden in the office has been anything but a return to normalcy. Unlike Harding, rather than unify the nation, he has divided it far worse than any president save for James Buchanan on the eve of the Civil War. And unlike the hapless Buchanan, Biden is purposely dividing the nation.
Polling shows that Americans are recoiling at Biden. Alarm bells are being sounded with polling showing deep disapproval of Biden, questions about his cognitive abilities and deep personal dislike for Biden. He is basically tied in matchups with the four-time indicted Trump.
All because Biden and the Democrats forgot a key rule in American politics. Voters will overlook and forgive much in politics if you are consistent with your brand. If they believe you lied to them, they will turn on you.
One of the reasons Richard Nixon went down during Watergate was the White House tapes revealed a person inconsistent with his public image. Yes, voters always considered Nixon to be a scrappy fighter (after all Eisenhower had famously used him as his hatchet man) and a bit unethical. Yet they thought of him also as a square, and the White House tapes with expletives deleted stunned them and presented a Nixon inconsistent with his brand. Likewise, Bill Clinton was always seen by voters as a womanizer and an overgrown frat boy so the Monica Lewinsky scandal barely dented his polling numbers.
The Joe Biden in office is not consistent with the brand that Americans had come to believe in during his vice presidency and the 2020 campaign. He comes across as an extreme progressive, mean-spirited, incompetent at best, senile at worst, who will do anything to further polarize the nation rather than bring it normalcy.
Just a brief look at some of his actions shows why Americans believe this, and Democrats are in a panic over 2024.
He has used his Justice Department to indict his predecessor breaking the unique American tradition of never prosecuting former presidents. While Democrats, play semantics and claim he did not directly order Attorney General Merrick Garland to do so, any reading of The New York Times article where it claimed he was puzzled that Trump had not been indicted and wanted Garland to play hardball politics. Contrast this with Harding who actually pardoned political opponents such as Eugen V. Debs or even Trump who despite calling for Hillary Clinton to be jailed never followed up.
Since taking office, Biden has declared war on parents. His Department of Justice considers parents protesting far-left school boards to be domestic terrorists. Even after Democrats lost all statewide offices in Virginia due to the war on parents, Biden doubled down in efforts to retain progressive support. Children in his words belong to the state not their parents. Their parents are at best misguided bigots and at worst fascists for opposing a curriculum that teaches America is racist and encourages 6-year-olds to change their gender.
Race is another dividing line for Biden. America was founded on racist and is systemically racist in the Democratic worldview. His recent condemnation of the Supreme Court as not normal after it declared race quotas for universities as unconstitutional continued to stoke the fires he and other progressives have started over race. In his speech, he repeatedly claimed the nation was racist and is still racist. He pushes racial divisions very much like his old segregationist friends from the 1970s did. The result is a further divided nation between the races.
Biden is stoking divisions with one objective – keeping Democrats in power. He has written off more than half the nation. He believes by targeting African American votes and the LGBQT community with his divisive talk, they will carry the day in 2024. Rather, what he is doing is narrowing the Democratic base even further after losing middle class white voters, Asians and Hispanics. Additionally, he is making the challenge for the next president to unify the nation even more challenging.
Democrats are fast awakening to the fact that a fooled American people are incensed with the betrayal. Voters bought into the Biden brand and are unforgiving to have been lied to. Some Democrats are talking about using the Hunter Biden story to send Joe packing. Warren G. Harding ranks among the lowest presidents in terms of presidential rankings by historians, although they all agree he was consistent with his personal brand and sought national unity. When the history of the Biden years is written, it will be said he was a president who campaigned as one thing and then revealed himself as another. Both the person and presidency will be ranked as failures.
