Fed Up With EU And Migrant Crisis, ‘Far-Right’ Sweeps Dutch Elections

ANALYSIS – Can we say ‘Nexit’? In what the global media now labels ‘far-right’ wins, staunch conservative, and Dutch nationalist leader, Geert Wilders has won a dramatic victory in the Netherlands’ general election, a political bombshell that will send shockwaves through the leftist European Union (EU).

This, especially as it comes on the heels of other populist right-wing victories in several other key European countries.

Wilders wants to cut immigration to the Netherlands to zero, hold a referendum on leaving the EU like Great Britain did with Brexit, (Netherlands Exit – ‘Nexit’), and ban mosques and the Quran – all pledges he may have to give up in coalition negotiations.

Some are also unconstitutional.

Despite his party’s solid victory, Dutch coalition politics are complex, and Wilders may still not end up as prime minister.

Still, his party’s victory signals a monumental shift in the politics of Holland, a founding member of the EU, and a country overwhelmed by mostly Muslim migrants.

As CNBC reported: “Wilders would join fellow EU leaders who are heavily critical of its policies — such as in Slovakia and Hungary — and those who are pushing their countries’ politics further to the right, like in Sweden and Italy.”

While polls show Dutch voters having a generally favorable view of the EU, there is plenty of room for criticizing the evil overlords at the European Union.

Wilders’ Freedom party was projected to win 37 seats, doubling its total after the vote, according to projections by press agency ANP.

Wilders’ party was followed by a leftwing alliance led by the EU’s former climate chief Frans Timmermans with 25 seats, and then the much more ‘free market,’ but otherwise moderate conservative, VVD party with 24 seats.

Why does Holland’s elections matter?

CNBC explained:

The Netherlands is the EU’s fifth-biggest economy and has proved influential, with a significant sway in policymaking. For 13 years the country has been led by centre-right Mark Rutte, who developed a reputation as the “teflon prime minister” for his ability to weather scandals while being a pragmatic dealmaker.

The Netherlands is also a key U.S. ally in the ever-important spheres of trade and technology, where it has rolled out export restrictions on advanced semiconductor equipment amid U.S. efforts to curb supplies to China. Its role here is vital due to its homegrown firm ASML, one of the most important semiconductor companies in the world.

CNBC added:

“In the unlikely event that Wilder does become prime minister, the biggest impact would be in the European Council. This is where there is the potential for Wilders to team up with other Eurosceptic leaders like [Hungary’s] Viktor Orban to disrupt policy-making, especially on foreign policy issues like sanctions, which require unanimity, and support for Ukraine,” Kellert said.

“The EU will also be thinking about what the results mean for the upcoming European Parliament elections next June. A repeat of the PVV’s success and of other populist parties across the EU would make it harder for the EU to pass legislation in some areas, particularly related to climate change.”

Let’s see how the coalition government negotiations go, and what the final governing coalition will be, but things look positive for Holland. And hopefully this is just the latest conservative blow to the leftist cabal ruling Europe.
