Criminal gangs in Haiti launched an unprecedented operation this week to seize control of that country's busiest international airport, leading to gun battles with police and soldiers and mounting civilian deaths.
The latest explosion of violence at strategic sites, including government buildings, comes after a massive jail break from two of the island nation's most notorious prisons. Hours after the assault on Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince, attacks commenced on the National Police Academy.
