The Conservative Party has governed the United Kingdom with a series of center-right administrations for 14 years. However, its era of dominance may be nearing its end.
Amidst abysmal polls reflecting a sense of discontent among the electorate, U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a snap general election scheduled for July 4 that could reshape the country’s political landscape.
After informing his ministers about his plans for the election, Sunak delivered remarks from a podium outside 10 Downing Street.
The announcement came as the Office for National Statistics showed the U.K.’s inflation dropped to 2.3%, close to the Bank of England’s 2% target.
As he discussed economic concerns, weaponized migration and global instability caused by China, Russia and Islamic extremism, Sunak had to raise his voice over pouring rain and protesters playing the song “Things Can Only Get Better.”
“Only a conservative government led by me can will not put our hard-earned economic stability at risk,” the prime minister concluded.
Sunak’s most prominent conservative critic, Nigel Farage, didn’t hold back as he took aim at his former colleague and boldly predicted a landslide victory for Labour.
