New polling data suggests that Michelle Obama may be the only Democrat who could potentially defeat Donald Trump in the upcoming presidential election.
The revelation comes as both a hopeful and contentious prospect for Democrats seeking a strong candidate to ensure victory in November.
Poll Results: Obama vs. Trump
The survey, conducted by Reuters/Ipsos, reveals that Michelle Obama would surpass Trump in a hypothetical matchup, securing 50% of the vote compared to his 39%. Notably, only 4% of respondents stated they would abstain from voting altogether. The 11-point lead highlights Obama’s uniquely strong position in a highly polarized political landscape.
Democratic Preference and Obama’s Popularity
According to a Rasmussen Reports poll released in February, Obama is the top choice among Democrats to replace Joe Biden on the 2024 ticket. Despite her widespread popularity, the former first lady has repeatedly stated she has no intention of pursuing a bid for the White House.

The poll surveyed 1,070 U.S. adults nationwide, including 892 registered voters, between July 1 and 2, and has a margin of error of 3.2 percentage points.
“Polls showing that Michelle Obama could beat Donald Trump simply reflect nostalgia for Barack,” Thomas Gift, an associate professor of political science and director of the Centre on U.S. Politics at University College London, told Newsweek.
“It’s easy to defeat the competition when you have no policy platform, no agenda, and haven’t been subjected to the kind of scrutiny that presidential candidates are in 2024. The former first lady has displayed zero interest in running, which means that suggestions that she could sky dive into the convention and save the Democratic Party from itself look like a fantasy.”
The director of communications for Obama’s office, reaffirmed her stance in March, stating, “As former First Lady Michelle Obama has expressed several times over the years, she will not be running for president.”
Moreover, the money raised by the Biden campaign can only be easily transferred to Vice President Kamala Harris. It could possibly be transferred to another candidate, but there are several legal and logistical challenges that would likely slow down the process.
Support for the Biden-Harris Ticket
Obama’s support for President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ reelection campaign remains steadfast, in public. However, privately, Obama has reportedly declined to campaign for President Biden due to the Biden family’s treatment of Hunter Biden’s ex-wife, Kathleen Buhle.
Since her divorce filings in 2017, Buhle has been shunned by the Biden family. Despite these tensions, Obama and Buhle have maintained a close friendship that began during her husband’s administration.
The Democratic Party’s Dilemma
The unwillingness of the Democratic Party’s most popular figure to actively campaign for Biden underscores the significant challenges the current administration faces. Without Obama’s direct involvement, Biden’s campaign must navigate these internal conflicts while striving to unite the party and secure a second term.
