Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has resigned one day after her disastrous appearance before the House Oversight Committee.
Cheatle appeared before the committee to discuss the Secret Service's failures that led to the nearly successful assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
In one particularly noteworthy exchange, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) made headlines with her blistering critique of Cheatle. An exasperated Mace at one point told the embattled director that she “was full of s**t.”
Cheatle herself called the Secret Service's performance that day its “most significant operational failure in decades,” though she only begrudgingly referred to it as a “colossal failure.”
Tuesday's development follows whistleblower allegations that Secret Service officials refused to provide Donald Trump with additional security in the two years prior to the July 13 assassination attempt.
The Trump campaign had reportedly requested more agents and magnetometers for two years. Each time, they were allegedly denied.
House Speaker Mike Johnson and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced Tuesday morning that they have agreed to set up a bipartisan task force to investigate the assassination attempt. The full House will vote on the proposal sometime this week.
The task force is expected to function similarly to a select committee, with a clear mandate and subpoena power to uncover the security failures that allowed the attempt on Trump's life.
