Kamala Harris has declined Donald Trump’s proposal for a presidential debate on Sept. 4 with Fox News. The Harris campaign insists that Trump should participate in the previously arranged presidential debate hosted by ABC News. Originally, this debate was set between Trump and President Joe Biden before Biden decided to withdraw from the presidential race.
The Debate Controversy
Trump’s Social Media Announcement
On Saturday, Trump took to social media to announce that he had accepted an invitation for a presidential debate on Fox News with a live studio audience. In a series of posts, he stated:
“I have agreed with Fox News to debate Kamala Harris on Wednesday, September 4th. The Debate was previously scheduled against Sleepy Joe Biden on ABC but has been terminated in that Biden will no longer be a participant, and I am in litigation against ABC Network and George Slopadopoulos, thereby creating a conflict of interest.”
The ABC News Debate
The ABC News debate, initially intended to feature Trump and Biden, was put in limbo after Biden’s withdrawal from the race. Trump cited his lawsuit as another reason for scrapping the debate.
Harris Campaign’s Response
Harris’ spokesperson, Michael Tyler, criticized Trump’s proposal, claiming that Trump is “running scared and trying to back out of the debate he already agreed to, and running straight to Fox News to bail him out.”
The standoff between the campaigns makes it increasingly unlikely that the presidential candidates will face each other in a debate.
Fox News Invitation and Harris’ Plans
Fox News extended a presidential debate invitation to both Trump and Harris on July 24. The network is currently considering venues in Pennsylvania.
Network President Jay Wallace and VP of Politics Jessica Loker sent a letter to both campaigns, including Trump’s senior advisers, Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles. The message? “We propose to host the debate in the state of Pennsylvania on Tuesday, September 17, just an early voting is getting underway there and in other key battlegrounds. We are open to discussion on the exact date, format and location – with or without an audience.”
The letter proposed journalists Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum moderate the debate.
Despite not hosting a Democratic presidential primary debate in the last two election cycles, Fox News has a record of highly-watched candidate town halls with big-names Democrats like Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.
Trump added that he’ll do a “major Town Hall” on Fox News if Harris doesn’t agree to his proposal.
Although the ABC News debate was scheduled for the week prior, Harris has stated that she will still use the airtime to speak to a national prime-time audience if Trump does not show up. It’s yet to be determined if ABC will transform the event into a Harris town hall.
Trump’s Ultimatum
In a final remark, Trump posted on Truth Social later on Saturday:
“I’ll see her on September 4th or, I won’t see her at all.”
