Stephen King, the famed horror novelist, has taken aim at Fox News host Jesse Watters for his controversial remarks about men planning to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming November election. This incident highlights the ongoing tensions between political figures and media personalities as the election season heats up.
Jesse Watters' Comments on ‘The Five'
During a recent segment on Fox News' popular show “The Five,” Jesse Watters made a series of comments that stirred significant controversy. He insinuated that men who support Kamala Harris have “mommy issues” or perhaps even a desire to transition into women. Watters stated:
“To be a man and vote for a woman, just because she's a woman, is either childish, that person has mommy issues or they're just trying to be accepted by other women.”
He further quipped:
“And I heard the scientists say the other day that when a man votes for a woman, he actually transitions into a woman.”
These remarks led to a playful yet pointed exchange with co-star Dana Perino, who mockingly replied:
“Oh, is that right? That's what the scientists say?”
To which Watters retorted:
“Yeah, that's what the scientists say.”
Tension Among Co-Stars
Watters also questioned why men would vote for Democrats, claiming:
“It's not the party of virtue, security, it's not the party of strength, it's definitely not the party of family.”
This drew a sharp response from co-star Jessica Tarlov, who countered:
“So first of all, everything Jesse said was wrong. I just want that on the record there.”
Watters challenged her to “name one thing” he got wrong, setting the stage for a heated debate.
Stephen King's Reaction
Stephen King was quick to respond to the segment, sharing the video clip with his more than 7 million Twitter followers and commenting simply, “This is weird.” King's reaction underscores his long-standing critique of Fox News and its hosts.
A Fox News spokesperson later clarified in a statement:
“Anyone who watched the full segment can obviously tell that he was joking, which was also made clear later in the discussion.”
King's Ongoing Critique of Fox News
This isn't the first time King has targeted Fox News. In March, he criticized “The Five” after a panelist compared President Joe Biden to “Old Yeller” due to his verbal missteps. King tweeted:
“The Five on Fox News is calling Biden Old Yeller. Right nickname, wrong candidate. Trump is the one who thinks he's running against Obama.”
The tweet referenced an incident where Trump mixed up Biden and former President Barack Obama during a rally in Richmond, Virginia, illustrating King's point about Trump's verbal blunder.
Shifting Political Support
After initially endorsing Biden for the 2024 election, King shifted his support to Kamala Harris following Biden's withdrawal from the race on July 21, amid concerns about his age from fellow Democrats. King recently urged Republican voters to “hold your nose” and vote for Harris in the November election, warning of the dangers of reelecting Trump:
“Republicans: If you have to hold your nose to vote for Harris, please do so. Trump is dangerous; a child doing a tantrum. There's only one adult in this contest. It's Harris.”
Trump's Controversial Comments
King's call to action came after Trump faced backlash for remarks made at the National Association for Black Journalists (NABJ) convention in Chicago. During the event, Trump questioned Harris' racial heritage, suggesting she “turned Black.” Trump said:
“She was always of Indian heritage, and she was always only promoting Indian heritage. I didn't know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black and now she wants to be known as Black.”
Rachel Scott, ABC News senior congressional correspondent and moderator of the event, countered Trump's claims:
“She's always identified as a Black woman. She went to a historically Black college.”
Trump responded by questioning Harris' identity, saying:
“I respect either one, but she obviously doesn't. Because she was Indian all the way and all of a sudden she made a turn and she went – she became a Black person. I think somebody should look into that too.”
King's Final Thoughts
Commenting on the NABJ event, King claimed that Trump “screwed the pooch” with his replies, emphasizing that:
“His supporters don't care (many won't even know), and Trump himself doesn't care. All he wants is to yank back the spotlight from Kamala Harris to where it belongs: him.”
