The state of Maryland is one that has fully embraced gun control and gone down that particular rabbit hole.
Much of the reason is because Baltimore is such a dangerous place. It’s also a city big enough to drown out the other voices in the state.
But nothing to worry about, folks, because gun control works. There’s absolutely no way guns can get into the hands of people who shouldn’t have them in Maryland, right?
Police arrested a 14-year-old Parkville High School student who had a loaded handgun.
Baltimore County police said the school was placed on a temporary lockdown Monday, but that has since been lifted.
An investigation continues.
At 14 years old, there’s no way this is someone who lawfully purchased a firearm, then brought it to school. It just didn’t happen.
Either this kid stole it from an adult in his life, stole it from some stranger, or obtained it illegally from someone who wasn’t inclined to follow laws in the first place.
What that means, though, is that all the gun control laws in place in Maryland–and I’m including federal laws here too, mind you–did nothing to stop a kid from bringing a gun to school. Absolutely nothing.
Of course, because this is a juvenile, we likely won’t get a lot of answers as to just how this happened, but we do know that Baltimore has problems with violent crime. It’s a dangerous city filled with armed felons. You know, other people who shouldn’t be able to get guns either due to gun control.
And yet, they do.
That’s the rub, isn’t it? For all of Maryland’s many anti-gun measures, nothing really seems to be keeping guns out of the hands of Baltimore’s criminal element. Remember, if a 14-year-old can get a gun, just about anyone else can, and likely do so regardless of their felon status.
There’s not much stopping someone.
As we’ve noted before, gun control laws only apply to the law-abiding. It sounds like a no-brainer here, but it’s apparently not. Many feel that if you stymie the flow of legal guns to law-abiding hands, you’ll inhibit the flow to criminals.
This argument does at least acknowledge that criminals get guns generally through mechanisms like theft and whatnot, but it still ignores that it simply isn’t going to make enough of a difference to do anything with regard to crime, but it can make it so a law-abiding citizen is unable to defend themselves when they most need it.
But a 14-year-old can get one.
Look, I may sound like a broken record here, but this isn’t exactly rocket science. If people who aren’t permitted to get guns lawfully can get them with relative ease, then what is the point of gun control in the first place?
It sure as hell hasn’t helped Baltimore one bit, nor has it seemed to help anywhere else it’s been enacted.
It’s beyond time to scrap this whole thing and relegate it to the dustbin of history where it long belongs.
