After a failed attempt to pass constitutional carry in the Pelican State last year, this year is looking much more promising.
This year's constitutional carry legislation – Senate Bill 1 – was passed by the Louisiana House of Representatives on Wednesday by a vote of 75-28. The measure passed the Louisiana Senate last week with a vote of 28-10.
One big change is in place from last year, which is that Louisiana now has a Republican governor.
Per the National Rifle Association's Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA):
“The bill is now headed to the desk of Governor Jeff Landry, who has pledged to sign the bill into law.
Senate Bill 1 strengthens the right to self-defense in Louisiana by recognizing the right of any law-abiding adult, who is at least 18 years old, to carry a concealed firearm without first having to obtain government permission.”
If signed into law, this legislation would make Louisiana the 28th constitutional carry state in the country.
