An intruder forced his way into a Louisiana home early Wednesday morning, assaulted a guest, and threatened to kill the victim and her family, police said.
But the homeowner is a gun owner — and used the weapon to put the threat to rest.
What are the details?
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office said 23-year-old Samael Raynaldo Maldonado-Lael forced his way through a window of a mobile home in the La Casa Mobile Home Park on Old Baton Rouge Highway in Hammond, WWL-TV reported. Hammond is just under an hour east of Baton Rouge.
He then assaulted a guest in the residence and threatened to kill the victim and her family, the station said, citing the sheriff’s office.
But the attack was cut short. The sheriff’s office said the homeowner shot Maldonado-Lael just above the knee, WWL reported.
Things get bizarre
With that, Maldonado-Lael took off all of his clothes and fled the scene, shattered a window of a nearby vehicle, and tried to barricade himself inside, the station said, citing the sheriff’s office.
Once authorities captured Maldonado-Lael, they took him to a hospital where he was treated for the gunshot wound and cuts from broken glass, none of which were life-threatening, WWL noted, citing the sheriff’s office.
Maldonado-Lael was soon booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail where he was charged with one count of home invasion, second-degree battery, vehicle burglary, and resisting arrest, the station said, citing the sheriff’s office.
Authorities added that Maldonado-Lael admitted to taking illegal narcotics prior to entering the home, WWL said, adding that the homeowner and guests sustained no injuries requiring medical attention.
How are folks reacting?
Commenters on the sheriff’s office Facebook post about the incident seemed decidedly pleased about how how it ended. Here’s a sampling:
- “If everyone would do that, this BS would stop,” one commenter wrote.
- “He wanted to play stupid games. He won a stupid prize,” another user stated.
- “Well, if you break into my home, and I’m there, you gonna get the same thing — only I’m gonna aim higher,” another commenter promised.

GOP-Led House Approves Iran War Powers Resolution In Rebuke To Trump
The House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a war powers resolution aimed at ending unauthorized U.S. military involvement in Iran, marking the most significant congressional challenge yet to President Donald Trump’s handling of the conflict.
The measure, sponsored by Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) invokes the 1973 War Powers Resolution and would require the administration to obtain explicit authorization from Congress before continuing hostilities against Iran, except in cases involving an imminent threat to the United States. The vote followed months of growing bipartisan concern over a conflict that began in.
