Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent acknowledged Wednesday that he threatened to “kick ass” during a heated confrontation last year, while firmly denying reports that he threatened to punch the now-acting Director of National Intelligence “in the face.”

The unusual exchange emerged during a Senate Finance Committee hearing, where Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) pressed Bessent about reports surrounding a confrontation between the two Trump administration officials during the summer of 2025.

According to Bessent, one key detail in the widely circulated account was inaccurate.

A jaw-dropping report from Time claims Iran’s internal records may show a death toll far higher than the regime has admitted: up to 30,000 people killed in just two days of ongoing protests on Jan. 8-9, 2026.

According to senior health ministry officials and hospital documentation reviewed by the outlet, the scale of deaths was so massive it reportedly overwhelmed the system — body bags ran out, and semi-trailers were allegedly used when ambulances couldn’t keep up.

Time continues:

The government’s internal count of the dead, not previously revealed, far surpasses the toll of 3,117 announced on Jan. 21 by regime hardliners who report directly to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. (Ministries report to the elected President.) The 30,000 figure is also far beyond tallies being compiled by activists methodically assigning names to the dead. As of Saturday, the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency said it had confirmed 5,459 deaths and is investigating 17,031 more.

TIME has been unable to independently verify these figures.

The Health Ministry’s two-day figure roughly aligns with a count gathered by physicians and first responders, and also shared with TIME. That surreptitious tally of deaths recorded by hospitals stood at 30,304 as of Friday, according to Dr. Amir Parasta, a German-Iranian eye surgeon who prepared a report of the data. Parasta said that number does not reflect protest-related deaths of people registered at military hospitals, whose bodies were taken directly to morgues, or that happened in locales the inquiry did not reach. Iran’s National Security Council has said protests took place in around 4,000 locations across the country.

“We are getting closer to reality,” Dr. Parasta said. “But I guess the real figures are still way higher.”

If the reported numbers are even close to accurate, the scale of killing over just 48 hours is almost unprecedented in recent decades.

“Most spasms of killing are not from shootings,” Les Roberts, a Columbia University professor who studies violent death, told TIME. He noted that in places like Aleppo and Fallujah, sudden surges in deaths were usually driven by explosives — not sustained gunfire.

Researchers reportedly found only one clear parallel — the “Holocaust by bullets,” when Nazis and their collaborators murdered an estimated 1.5 million Jews during the early phase of Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union, before the Final Solution shifted into centralized extermination camps.

The most notorious example was Babyn Yar (Babi Yar) outside Kyiv on Sept. 29–30, 1941, when Nazi death squads executed 33,771 Ukrainian Jews by gunshot, according to reports sent back to Einsatzgruppen headquarters in Berlin.

While best known for the horrific two-day massacre in September 1941, the ravine remained a killing ground until just days before Soviet forces liberated Kyiv in November 1943.

The death toll from Iran’s crackdown on nationwide protests — triggered in late December by economic hardship and political grievances — remains highly contested and extremely difficult to verify due to:

  • A near-total internet and communications blackout imposed by Iranian authorities, limiting outside access to information.
  • Hospitals overwhelmed by casualties and under pressure or surveillance by security forces.
  • Differing methodologies among sources: government figures, activist counts, leaked hospital data and internal ministry numbers are all at odds.

Independent estimates outside of the 30,000 figure earlier ranged from thousands to tens of thousands, with some activist and media compilations suggesting upwards of 16,500–20,000 deaths, though these too lack full verification.

The protests quickly grew into one of Iran’s most sustained nationwide movements in years and were met by increasingly violent repression from security forces, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Basij militia. Officials have admitted people have died, but they’ve framed the unrest as “terrorism” and blamed foreign meddling.

With an ongoing blackout and almost no independent access, every death toll is still provisional. But the leak of internal figures suggesting tens of thousands killed would mark a dramatic jump from what the public has been told so far.

Gee, this is the perfect peaceful ideology we should continue to allow to flourish here like in Minneapolis and Dearborn. Or maybe totalitarian communism like they have in Russia where Stalin murdered 20 million to make his omelette or China where Mao murdered 50 million to create his perfect utopia. No doubt these ideologies are so much better than a capitalistic constitutional Republic.

The danger to Trump here is that, if he doesn’t respond, he is no more than a paper tiger. To tell the people he is coming, and then just let them fall into the precipice is showing how untrustworthy you are. There is a difference between 60 thousand Greenlanders and 60 million Persians. I’ve nearly gotten to the point where I find that Trump doesn’t carry through with his “goals”. We all seem to be left hanging. He plays ring-around-the-rosie who should have been weakened out of existence by now, but instead Trump sacrifices more and more Ukrainians in the name of “peace”, and now 30,000 Persians for said peace. Now, while all these despots keep causing havoc around the world, they continue to exist for the inevitable confrontation that WILL happen in the future, now that they HAVE a future. Trump has become a Neville Chamberlain of the 21st century. Venezuela will go back to their old ways through inaction, and Cuba will laugh at the empty threats. China sees all this and knows that the American paper tiger will ignore their assault on Taiwan in the name of peace and a Nobel Peace Prize (do they award them during world conflicts?). As a civil war approaches in the U.S. will we allow the instigators free reign in the name of peace?
