Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis wants Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar not only expelled from Congress but also denaturalized and deported.
DeSantis' uncompromising remarks follow video footage showing Omar speaking to a room full of Somali supporters last weekend in Minneapolis.
Translating Omar's Somali-language speech has become a point of contention. Omar referred to herself as “Somali First” and said she would always act in Somalia's interest.
Critics point out that Omar has accused pro-Israel politicians of dual loyalty.
During her speech, Omar spoke out against a proposal for Ethiopia to gain access to the sea through the Republic of Somaliland, a breakaway province of Somalia.
The Jerusalem Post further reports:
“The US is a country where one of your daughters is in Congress to represent your interest,” Omar declared in her speech. “For as long as I am in the US Congress, Somalia will never be in danger, its waters will not be stolen by Ethiopia or others … Sleep in comfort, knowing I am here to protect the interests of Somalia from inside the US system.”
“We, as Somalians, love each other… people who know they are Somalians first and Muslim second who protect one another and come to each other's aid and to the aid of other Muslims too,” Omar said in her remarks.
The Florida governor and former 2024 Republican presidential candidate was the most prominent of several Republican politicians to condemn Omar's remarks. “Expel from Congress, denaturalize and deport!” Desantis replied to a post of the original video on social media platform X.
As a teenager, Omar migrated from Somalia to the United States. She later became one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress.
