Louisiana Rep. Cleo Fields Won’t Seek Reelection, Will Run For Former State Senate Seat

Louisiana Rep. Cleo Fields is leaving Congress after just one term, choosing to return to state politics instead of defending a House seat that became dramatically more Republican after redistricting.

On Tuesday, the Democrat announced he will not seek reelection in 2026. Instead, he’ll run for his former Louisiana Senate seat, which became vacant following the death of Democratic Sen. Larry Selders.

A district transformed

Fields’ decision follows a major shift in Louisiana’s congressional map.

After the Supreme Court allowed the state to adopt new district lines, the 6th Congressional District was redrawn into a seat that would have favored President Donald Trump by roughly 32 percentage points.

The new map quickly changed the political calculus, turning what had been a Democratic-held district into one Republicans view as one of their best pickup opportunities in next year’s elections.

Back to familiar territory

Fields insisted politics wasn’t the deciding factor.

After “a great deal of prayer and reflection,” he said he concluded he could better serve Louisiana by returning to the state Senate.

“I feel my calling to serve the people is better put to use back home than here in D.C.,” Fields said.

If elected, he would return to a seat he previously held during three separate terms before winning election to Congress in 2024.

Republicans see an opening

Whether redistricting factored into Fields’ decision or not, Republicans were already preparing to compete aggressively for the seat.

Just one day before his announcement, the National Republican Congressional Committee added Louisiana’s 6th District to its list of more than 30 Democratic-held seats it hopes to flip in 2026, underscoring the party’s confidence that the redrawn district has become one of its best opportunities to expand its House majority.
