Michigan Senator Announces Retirement

-

's senior Senator has announced that she will not seek re-election at the end of her current term.

Senator made the declaration today via a media release issued by her congressional office.

In the release, Stabenow also added the following sentiment:

“As part of my own new generation, I was elected to the Ingham County Commission in 1974 at the age of 24. As the youngest and first woman to chair the Board, this began years of breaking barriers, blazing trails, and being the ‘first' woman to reach historic milestones as an elected official, including the honor of being the first woman from Michigan elected to the U.S. Senate. But I have always believed it's not enough to be the ‘first' unless there is a ‘second' and a ‘third'….”

Stabenow's retirement leaves open up a key senate seat. Her 2018 re-election campaign was the closest Senate race in Michigan since 2000. Stabenow defeated Republican John James by a margin of 275,660 votes or 6.50%.
