Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is set to step down as the Republican Senate leader in November.
McConnell, 82, revealed the decision in a speech on the Senate floor. The Associated Press was first to obtain a copy of the senator's prepared remarks.
“One of life's most underappreciated talents is to know when it's time to move on to life's next chapter,” McConnell told his colleagues. “So I stand before you today … to say that this will be my last term as Republican leader of the Senate.”
Although he plans to step down as Senate Republican leader this year, the Kentucky Republican intends to serve the remainder of his term, which ends in January 2027.
