FOR F’s SAKE, BIDEN! – Biden targets ‘extremist’ Trump allies as democratic threat in fraught political moment. U.S. President Joe Biden charged Republican allies of Donald Trump with undermining the country’s democracy and urged voters on Thursday to reject extremism ahead of November’s midterm elections.
America’s elusive military ‘margin of safety.’ Even the Reagan buildup wasn’t enough. Now, take into account 25 years of defense cuts.
B-21 Raider: The Air Force’s new stealth bomber Russia and China fear. The Raiders are on their way. The Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider is supposed to be the US Air Force’s (USAF) next great long-range bomber. If Air Force expectations pan out, a hundred or more of the bombers will join the fleet in the next decades, providing the core of one-third of the nuclear triad and a lethal precision strike capability.

FRY HIM – Indiana man charged with murder in Dutch soldiers’ shooting. A 22-year-old Indiana man was charged Thursday with murder in the fatal shooting of a Dutch soldier and the wounding of two others in downtown Indianapolis.
RUSSIA THREAT – UKRAINE WAR
Gorbachev was “shocked and bewildered” by war in Ukraine, interpreter says. Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, who died earlier this week at the age of 91, was “shocked and bewildered” by Russia’s war in Ukraine, his interpreter of 37 years, Pavel Palazhchenko, told Reuters Thursday.
Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 191. IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said his agency would maintain a constant presence at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant after he returned from a mission there while leaving experts from his team at the site.
US war-gamed with Ukraine ahead of counteroffensive and encouraged more limited mission. In the buildup to the current Ukrainian counteroffensive, the US urged Kyiv to keep the operation limited in both its objectives and its geography to avoid getting overextended and bogged down on multiple fronts, multiple US and western officials and Ukrainian sources tell CNN.
Five UN inspectors remain at embattled nuclear plant. Part of the I.A.E.A. mission departed the occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant after roughly four hours, but others remain to continue assessing its safety.
IRAN THREAT
IRAN IS PLAYING BIDEN – Iran’s response to nuclear deal ‘not constructive,’ US State Department says. An effort to save the Iran nuclear deal appeared to hang in the balance on Thursday after Washington said Tehran’s latest reply to the European Union proposal was “not constructive.”
It’s the worst possible time to revive the Iran nuclear deal. The Biden administration’s push to reach a new nuclear agreement with Iran is completely out of step with not only our own interests in the Middle East but also regional developments that are bypassing Washington. The White House risks eroding our already tenuous position in the region and undermining our credibility with regional allies.
INTERNATIONAL SECURITY
India launches new aircraft carrier as concerns over China grow. INS Vikrant is the largest warship built in India and can carry a crew of 1,600 and operate a fleet of 30 fighter aircraft.
NOT HELPFUL NOW – Poland demands $1.3 trillion war reparations from Germany. Poland’s top politician said Thursday that the government will seek equivalent of some $1.3 trillion in reparations from Germany for the Nazis’ World War II invasion and occupation of his country.
PLAYING BOTH SIDES – Indian troops join Russian military exercise despite US concerns. Soldiers from the Indian army have landed in Russia for a week-long military exercise, India’s defense ministry said on Thursday, days after the United States said it had concerns about any country exercising with Russia now.
US MILITARY AND SPACE
DESERVES TO BURN IN HELL – Former Army chaplain who sexually abused inmates gets 7 years in prison. Behind a closed chapel office door inside a federal women’s prison in California, a chaplain forced inmates seeking his spiritual guidance to have sex with him, exploiting their faith and their powerlessness behind bars for his own gratification, prosecutors said.
