BIDEN WITCH HUNT – Texas’ Operation Lone Star probed for alleged civil rights violations. The Department of Justice is investigating alleged civil rights violations under Operation Lone Star, a multibillion-dollar border initiative announced last year by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, according to state records obtained by ProPublica and The Texas Tribune.
NATIONAL SECURITY
BIDEN BOONDOGGLE OR VITAL NEW AGENCY? The national bidding war for ARPA-H. The agency is being modeled after the Pentagon’s research arm, DARPA. The Advanced Research Project Agency for Health, or ARPA-H, is a pet project of President Biden’s that would focus on breakthrough health care and technology innovations, looking for and funding ways to cure cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes and more.

PREPARING FOR WAR – FBI director suggests China bracing for sanctions if it invades Taiwan. In a rare speech alongside London counterpart, Director Christopher Wray amps up warnings about Chinese hacking and influence operations.
Beijing imposes mainland China’s first Covid vaccine mandate in face of Omicron subvariant. Beijing on Wednesday announced a Covid-19 vaccine mandate for residents to enter public venues, becoming the first city in mainland China to do so as it attempts to contain a highly infectious Omicron subvariant.
RUSSIA THREAT
Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 134. The Ukrainian military said it has so far staved off any significant Russian advance into the north of its Donetsk region, but pressure is intensifying with heavy shelling on the city of Sloviansk and nearby populated areas.
Ukraine’s military plans to limit free movement to make conscription easier. Ukraine’s military has announced plans to introduce a system of permits that would prohibit men eligible for conscription from leaving the region where they are registered.
Russia’s offensive gains pace in Donetsk; focus shifts to Slovyansk. After sweeping through Luhansk, Russian forces are gaining ground in the neighboring Donetsk region. Both are part of the industrial Donbas heartland of eastern Ukraine that Moscow is seeking to control. Donetsk’s regional governor is urging the area’s 350,000 residents to evacuate as Russia intensifies its bombardment campaign, telling reporters Tuesday: “The destiny of the whole country will be decided by the Donetsk region.
The West should help Ukraine get more Russian-made weapons, ammo from around the world, think tank says. Despite an influx of Western systems, Ukraine likely will remain dependent on Soviet-era arms for the foreseeable future.
Latvia to reinstate compulsory military service amid Russia’s war on Ukraine. 15 years after abolishing the measure, Riga plans to make all men aged 18-27 complete 11 months of training.
IRAN THREAT
US imposes new Iran sanctions amid efforts to revive nuclear deal. US measures targeting Iranian petroleum and petrochemical sales come ahead of Joe Biden’s visit to the region next week.
Iran TV says several foreigners, a UK diplomat, detained for alleged spying. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have detained several foreigners, including Britain’s second most senior envoy in Tehran, for alleged acts of spying such as taking soil samples in restricted areas, state television reported on Wednesday.
INTERNATIONAL SECURITY
UK’s Boris Johnson ‘to resign’ after losing party’s support. The 58-year-old Conservative became prime minister in 2019 but has suffered a series of scandals.
US MILITARY AND SPACE
WELL-DESERVED – New “Atomic Veterans” medal honors those involved in nuclear weapon tests, operations. Veterans who performed the secret, often dangerous work of testing nuclear weapons deserve new recognition and may now call themselves “Atomic Veterans,” according to the Defense Department.
Tens of thousands of part-time soldiers face discharge for missing COVID vax deadline. The Army’s deadline for its part-time soldiers in the Army Reserve and Army National Guard to receive the COVID-19 vaccine passed last week, and tens of thousands of members face potential discharges as the service fights to buoy its end-strength in a tough year for recruiting.
