Send a HeroBox Care Package Today!In response to Russian leader Vladimir Putin's aggressive military actions around Ukraine, President Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated on February 8 that the final certification and opening of the already completed $11 billion Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia to Europe will be halted if Russia invades Ukraine.
“If Russia invades, that means tanks and troops crossing the border of Ukraine again, then there will no longer be a Nord Stream 2,” Biden said. “We will bring an end to it.”
President Trump had sanctioned the same pipeline in late 2019 in an attempt to freeze it out of concerns that it would only increase Europe's dependence on Russian gas.
However, Biden reversed Trump's actions soon after coming to office in 2021.
As previously noted, Europe already receives over one third of its natural gas from Russia.
Putin apparently began throttling Russia's gas flows to Europe late last year.
