Buttigieg Fails To Acknowledge Electric Vehicle Scandal

-

As reported this week by The Washington Free Beacon, lithium-ion batteries in electric bikes and scooters are “exploding, starting and killing people.”

Here is a number of incidents included in their report.

Earlier this year, a 63-year-old man was killed and nearly a dozen people injured when an e-scooter battery exploded and ignited a blaze that engulfed a three-story house in Queens, N.Y. Days later, 18 children were injured when an unauthorized day care center, also in Queens, caught fire due to a lithium-ion battery explosion.

Earlier this month, an electric bike battery sparked a massive blaze in the West Bronx that injured seven people—two seriously—and destroyed a local grocery store.

By the numbers: In 2022, electric bike and scooter batteries caused 216 fires that injured 147 people and killed six in New York City alone. So far this year, the batteries have been blamed for 22 fires resulting in 36 injuries and two deaths in New York City.

The publication noted that Buttigieg has an obsession “with bicycles of all kinds” and even worked hard to bring “Lime bikes and scooters…to South Bend” while he was mayor, which “have since been turned into scrap metal.”

Lithium ion batteries are not only used in these bikes, but also in which can have driving ranges are much less than advertised — especially in colder or hotter climates or in inclement weather.

The cobalt contained in these batteries is commonly acquired from mines that scream human rights violation. According to UNICEF, “about 20% of cobalt sourced from the central African nation of [the Democratic Republic of the Congo] comes from artisanal mines, where some 40,000 children work in extremely dangerous conditions.”

This is yet another example of how the green technologies being pushed by liberals — often at taxpayer expense — can wind up doing more harm than good.

A recent tweet I came across rhetorically asked, “Do you know how bad of a Transportation Secretary you need to be for the general population to know who the Transportation Secretary even is?”

Poor can't catch a break in his day job. No matter how hard he tries, things keep breaking on his watch.

Trains are derailing, the FAA is repeatedly having radar issues and now, e-bikes that the and its allies keep pushing under their ambitious plans are catching fire.

And I don't mean that figuratively.
