Unserious people doing profoundly silly things is usually fodder for a network sitcom, a buddy flick or possibly a web short. It’s not the kind of thing that’s supposed to happen in the House of Representatives.
But in the wake of Speaker Kevin McCarthy and an overwhelming majority of House members voting to pass a 45-day funding bill that avoided a government shutdown, the unserious are unleashing their silliness in spades.
The spectacle began with Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz bringing a motion to the House floor declaring the speakership vacant. Once the motion was on the floor, the House had to vote within 48 hours.
History was made with its success. The last vote on a motion to declare the speakership vacant was in 1910. It failed.
But history is hardly on the minds of these stunt pols, who really do seem to be in office for the LOLs as much as they are for the salary and perks. How else to explain their insistence on going after McCarthy rather than addressing the big issues confronting the nation?
To pick just one….how about the massive debt and deficits these same pols say must be addressed?
They don’t really seem to care about such matters. If they did, they would be using the 45 days of budgetary breathing space to come up with serious plans addressing the major drivers of federal red ink: entitlements and debt service.
As the Cato Institute’s Romina Boccia writes:
Congress must get serious about addressing the unsustainable growth in the U.S. debt that’s almost entirely driven by increases in health care, Social Security, and interest costs. Just last week, the interest rate on the 10‐year Treasury bond reached 4.5% for the first time since 2007, driving up the cost of federal debt servicing—a debt that’s now as large as the entire U.S. economy and growing at a dangerous rate.
Under current projections, the federal government will seek to borrow in excess of four times the amount of debt, in just the next 30 years, as the United States has borrowed over its entire history ($120 trillion versus $26 trillion in publicly held debt).
Addressing that real and pressing issue would be a fantastic use of lawmakers’ time, attention and work.

Remember back in 2015 when Donald Trump starting talking about draining the swamp. Well, everything we have witnessed since then adds evidence to the “existance”of it, at best.. At worst, (and probably nearer the truth) It has gotten deeper and broader. Even folks that were not on the radar before, are joining in the fray of crime. Not only joining, but no one seems to even attempt to be clever about it. It’s right out in broad daylight, because no one thinks they will be held accountable.
There seems to be no way out of this craziness without God’s help.
