Crisis – Unpatriotic, Young White Democrats Are Rejecting Military Service

TUESDAY PDB – Patriotism’s decline imperils the military. Trying to appeal to woke young people will only make the recruitment problem more severe.

PENTAGON WOKENESS IS THE PROBLEM.

The divisiveness of American politics has undermined our military in a way the Pentagon doesn’t understand or refuses to acknowledge. To attract Generation Z recruits after President Biden’s election, the military changed its marketing strategy.

Starting in 2021, the military released advertisements emphasizing individualism and diversity over assimilation into a cohesive force with shared martial values. The Army called its campaign “a distinct departure” from traditional recruiting.

Yet the military’s recruitment crisis has only grown worse. Generals blame an increasingly overweight, overmedicated, and undereducated youth pool. 

Those factors have contributed for years, but here’s the essential problem now: Young white Democrats have lost faith in their country and are rejecting military service.

ISRAEL’S WAR AGAINST HAMAS TERROR

THIS IS WAR – Israeli forces battle Hamas around Gaza City, as military says 800,000 have fled south. Israeli ground forces attacked Hamas militants and infrastructure on Tuesday in northern Gaza, as warplanes continued to strike along the entire sealed-off territory.

MAZEL TOV – WELL DONE! – Israeli soldier rescued after Hamas abduction. The 19-year-old soldier was taken after Hamas gunmen overran and briefly captured a military base in Nahal Oz, just east of the northern Gaza Strip. This, as the remains of a 23-year-old kidnapped German Israeli woman were found in Gaza, beheaded.

US SUPPORT FOR ISRAEL

BIDEN FEARS HIS OWN FAR-LEFTIST DEMOCRATS – Biden’s support for Israel now comes with words of caution. Team Biden has become more critical of Israel’s response to Hamas, a shift that U.S. officials attribute to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

BUT TERRORISTS DON’T FEAR BIDEN – US troops in Iraq and Syria attacked two dozen times in two weeks. The total number of drone attacks on bases housing U.S. troops has grown to at least 23.

USS Bataan, USS Carter Hall will linger in Red Sea. They will remain for an extended period as part of the U.S. naval buildup in the Middle East

Where US troops are stationed in the Middle East. With the Israel-Hamas war escalating, the U.S. risks becoming involved in a larger conflict that could entangle some of the more than 40,000 U.S. military personnel based across the region.

House GOP unveils $14.3 billion Israel aid package. House Republicans unveiled the package on Monday, a show of support for the embattled U.S. ally amid its war against Hamas.

NATIONAL SECURITY

US isn’t ready for a war of great powers. Joe Biden’s recent Oval Office address marked a key moment in the deepening competition between America and its allies, versus the axis of dictatorships coalescing around Russia, China, Iran and North Korea.

Minot leaders see ‘extremely real’ threat from China for both bombers and ICBMs. Col. Daniel S. Hoadley and Col. Kenneth C. McGhee command the 5th Bomb Wing and the 91st Missile Wing, respectively, and work closely together.

HOMELAND SECURITY – LAW ENFORCEMENT

GOOD! – Judge orders feds to stop cutting C-wire Texas Guard put up on border. State troopers and National Guard members placed concertina wire on the Texas-Mexico border in Eagle Pass. Border Patrol agents have cut through it.

FAILURE! – Army reservist’s family voiced concern months before Maine shooting. Robert Card’s family alerted the sheriff they were concerned about his mental health. The sheriff said his office reached out to Card’s Army Reserve unit.

Hackers accessed 632,000 email addresses at US Justice, Defense departments. A Russian-speaking hacking group obtained access to the email addresses as part of the sprawling MOVEit hack last summer.

CHINA THREAT

THEY WERE HEROES, BUT THAT WAS A DIFFERENT, NONCOMMUNIST, NONGENOCIDAL, CHINA – China fetes American veterans of World War II known as ‘Flying Tigers.’ This, as Washington and Beijing look to past collaboration for inspiration on improving today’s strained ties.

HILARIOUS! AND VERY DANGEROUS – China military says Philippine ship ‘illegally entered’ waters near Scarborough Shoal without ‘authorization.’ And it urged the Philippines to immediately stop its ‘provocations.’

RUSSIA THREAT– UKRAINE WAR

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 615. Kyiv military officials said Russia has bulked up its forces around the devastated city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine and has switched its troops from defense to offence.

What are the takeaways from Ukraine’s fight in the Black Sea? Ukraine has shown surprising naval capability in the Black Sea, helping to protect its shores and shipping while keeping its predator’s fleet at bay.

EUROPE MUST DO MORE! – Production and politics: The twin concerns that could derail arming Ukraine. Last week’s European Council meeting in Brussels ended with a pledge that Ukraine will “remain a priority,” but there are fissures, both political and logistical, in Kyiv’s support.

RIP, BROTHER – US Army veteran killed in Ukraine ‘fought for good over evil.’ David Lee Cote, who served in the Michigan Army National Guard from 2008 to 2014, was killed by a Russian drone on Oct. 1.

SPACE THREAT

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

US, South Korea, Australia commence air-defense drills on heels of ground exercises. Over 130 allied aircraft began large-scale airpower drills this week to improve their teamwork, three days after U.S. and South Korean soldiers concluded a ground and air exercise.

Slovakia’s new government announces a massive deployment at the Hungarian border to curb migration. It announced a big deployment of police and armed forces Monday.

US MILITARY

NOT GOOD – Navy 30-year shipbuilding plan will cost billions more, lower lethality temporarily. The Navy’s plan to create a larger, more lethal fleet will cost billions of dollars more than the service says while reducing its firepower in the short term.

Top Marine general hospitalized, leaving 3-star as acting leader. Lt. Gen. Karsten Heckl is the interim acting commandant following Gen. Eric Smith’s medical emergency Sunday evening.

JOIN UP, OLD TIMERS! – Air Force, Space Force raise max enlistment age to 42. Aspiring airmen and guardians now have more time to join the Department of the Air Force.

Guard, reserve troops get fewer veterans disability claims approved. They are less likely to get their claims approved than their active-duty counterparts because of incomplete military records and inadequate oversight of their injuries.
