DOJ Seeks To Expose Anonymous Reddit User Over ICE Criticism

The Trump administration is escalating efforts to identify an anonymous Reddit user who posted criticism of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), issuing a grand jury subpoena demanding the platform turn over personal account information.

Federal authorities have ordered Reddit to appear before a grand jury in Washington, D.C., and provide identifying details — including name, address, and phone number — tied to a user known only as “John Doe.”

The legal fight began when ICE sought the user’s identity through an administrative summons. Attorneys representing the Reddit user challenged that request in federal court, arguing it was not legally justified and targeted protected political speech.

After that effort stalled, prosecutors moved the case to a grand jury — a step legal experts say gives the government broader investigative powers and operates largely out of public view.

The subpoena reportedly requires Reddit to produce a wide range of account data by mid-April.

No Allegation of Criminal Conduct?

Lawyers for the anonymous user say the posts in question contain no threats or evidence of criminal activity, describing them instead as commentary on immigration enforcement and local policy.

While the posts included identifying information about an ICE agent involved in the fatal January 2026 shooting of a 37-year-old woman in Minneapolis, that information was already publicly available and had been widely reported by news outlets.

As Ars Technica reports:

The Trump administration has accused ICE critics of doxxing agents in some cases. But the copy of the summons to Reddit available on the court docket doesn’t identify any specific posts made by the Reddit user, who lives in Oregon.

“When John Doe’s attorneys later reviewed their Reddit posts, they found nothing to suggest criminal activity or intent,” The Intercept article said. In one instance, Doe commented in response to a Minnesota Star Tribune article in January 2026 about Jonathan Ross, the ICE officer who fatally shot Renée Good in Minneapolis.

“John Doe responded by sharing that Ross had lived in Chaska, Minnesota; grew up in Indiana; and served in the Indiana National Guard—biographical details that were circulating widely at the time,” and wrote that “Hopefully he moves up to Stillwater State Penitentiary,” according to The Intercept.

On a different occasion, Doe suggested that another Reddit user write “Urine speaks louder than words” on an anti-ICE protest sign. “TSA sucks and we all know it,” Doe wrote in another comment thread.

In a declaration submitted to the court, Doe said the account is used to participate in political discussions, both through original posts and interactions in comment threads across the platform.

“I utilize this account to engage in political speech through direct posts, as well as dialogue with community members in comment threads associated with my own and others’ posts,” Doe stated. “Reddit allows users to post and engage on the service without publicly disclosing their legal identity. Like many other users on the site, I use Reddit to converse anonymously.”

Doe is believed to be a U.S. citizen based in Oregon who primarily uses the platform to engage in political discussion.

Free speech advocates say this isn’t just about one account.

Groups like the Electronic Frontier Foundation are warning that using a grand jury subpoena to unmask a critic crosses into dangerous territory — one that could chill lawful speech far beyond this case.

Broader Implications

Their concern is simple: if the government can compel platforms to reveal the identities of users engaged in controversial or critical speech, anonymity itself starts to erode.

And anonymity isn’t a loophole — it’s a longstanding feature of American political discourse.

From the Federalist Papers to modern whistleblowers, the ability to speak without immediate retaliation has always been part of the system — especially when that speech is objectionable.
