An NHL game between the Seattle Kraken and New York Rangers had to be played in a partial blackout after Seattle’s “Climate Pledge Arena,” which bills itself as “the most progressive, responsible and sustainable arena in the world” suffered an arena power failure.
Seattle lost the game 4-1. Blackouts and power failures have become synonymous with “green” energy, as wind and solar power is notoriously unreliable and prone to breakdowns.
“The game was halted after about a minute of play, and after a wait of about 10 minutes the game resumed without the lights coming back on,” ESPN reports. The teams switched sides at the midway point of each period due to the lighting issue.”
The “green” power failure appears to have affected play, with at least of the game’s goals scored against the goaltender trying to track the puck on the darker side of the arena.
“For me, I want it darker so it’s harder for goalies. That’s why I scored two,” said New York’s Artemi Panarin.
“I thought, you know, it’s Climate Pledge Arena, maybe they were using energy-efficient bulbs or something,” joked New York goalie Jonathan Quick.
“Climate Pledge Arena” bills itself as “green” and aims to be “carbon neutral,” a term with no scientific basis.
“Our goal to be the most progressive, responsible and sustainable arena in the world,” the arena boasts on its website.
“We aren’t named after a corporation. We are named after The Climate Pledge, founded by Amazon and Global Optimism in 2019, which is a commitment from companies globally to be net zero carbon by 2040,” the arena brags.
“We are powered by 100% on- and off-site renewable energy,” the arena states.
“Both on the Alaska Airlines Atrium roof and above the 1st Ave N. Garage, we have more than 1,300 on-site solar panels generating an average of 440,000 kwh annually,” they add. “What we can’t generate on-site, we look for renewable sources off-site. One of the ways to procure this power is through Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs).”

Sen. Ruben Gallego Moves to Challenge Trump Green Card Policy
Arizona Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego is launching an effort to challenge a new Trump Administration immigration policy that could require many green card applicants to leave the United States and complete the process abroad.
According to a report from The Hill, Gallego is not only seeking to overturn the policy itself but is also pursuing a procedural strategy that could make it easier for Congress to reverse the change.
The dispute revolves around a recent U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) policy affecting how certain immigrants obtain lawful permanent residency.
