Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent acknowledged Wednesday that he threatened to “kick ass” during a heated confrontation last year, while firmly denying reports that he threatened to punch the now-acting Director of National Intelligence “in the face.”

The unusual exchange emerged during a Senate Finance Committee hearing, where Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) pressed Bessent about reports surrounding a confrontation between the two Trump administration officials during the summer of 2025.

According to Bessent, one key detail in the widely circulated account was inaccurate.

While he denied threatening.

PAUL’S DEFENSE BRIEF (PDB) – As details of 28-point peace plan for Ukraine attributed to Trump administration have emerged, European leaders and U.S. lawmakers, who say it didn’t come from U.S., railed against the plan as straight out of Russia’s playbook.

It asks for major territorial concessions and a limited military from Ukraine.

Regardless of where the plan came from, senior European leaders are taking it seriously and voicing strong criticism. The top general for the Netherlands said that while discussions on how to end the war are “always good,” the presentation of a take-it-or-leave-it deal arranged without input from the continent is the wrong approach.

He added: “Russia can stop this immediately. They are the aggressors. So, stop it. Withdraw. And, you have your peace.”

The U.S. proposal has put Ukraine in a delicate position — caught between placating its most important ally, and not capitulating to its powerful neighbor, Russia. Volodymyr Zelensky has reacted diplomatically.

Meanwhile, the pushback against the proposal has been so fierce that the U.S. and Ukraine promise ‘updated’ peace framework after criticism of pro-Russian points in the original plan.

But Europe has already presented its own 28-point counter proposal plan for Ukraine. It uses the U.S. plan as its basis but with numerous point-by-point deletions and alterations, much more fair overall and favorable to Ukraine.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY – Here’s a roundup of today’s other top defense news from conservative national security expert PAUL CRESPO.

At least Trump has them talking peace. His plan won’t be the final agreement but it is forcing both sides to negotiate. It is the only way that war will end.
