Extreme Actions Suggest White House Run on Newsom’s Mind

-

California Gov. says he's not a candidate for the 2024 Democratic presidential nomination. But his most recent actions to “do something” about global warming are another indication the top job is very much on his mind.

According to Bloomberg News, Newsom said he's going to accelerate the Golden State's push to a renewable energy future. What does that mean?  For one, more misery for California residents. Newsom wants:

…an end to building gas-burning power plants, even as the move away from fossil fuels has threatened his state with blackouts and forced him to reconsider nuclear power.

Would that things only ended there, with the potential for more blackouts. Newsom's plans are far more ambitious:

In a letter to the state's top regulator, the Democratic governor also called for building offshore wind farms, deploying 6 million home heat pumps, requiring the aviation industry to increase its use of clean fuels, and setting firm targets for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere using both land management and machines designed for the task.

The conceit that a single U.S. state can, say, eliminate as much greenhouse gas emitting pollutants as , India, or any other developing nation is bad enough.  But the political calculus at play here makes the environmental conceit look positively benign.

Newsom has invented a national role for himself as the Democratic pol who gets things done – as opposed to the or congressional , who promise much, but deliver nothing. It earns Newsom attention among the constituency he believes will choose the next nominee: young progressives.

Biden feeds the Newsom role when, on climate change, for instance, the president rejects panicked calls to declare a national emergency over climate change. Biden's actions – a few promises to help folks beat the summer heat – hardly begin to ease the doom-and-destruction narrative bubbling on the left. And so presto: A ready-made avenue for Gavin Newsom to look effective, concerned, commanding…everything Mr. Biden isn't in the eyes of many Democrats.

  1. If I were a Democratic voter, and ever decided to vote for Biden, it would only be if he were running against Newsom or Hillary. As it is, I keep hoping Joe doesn’t do much more damage and hangs in there, because the unthinkable is Harris.

    • All people around the country needs to do is see how he screwed up, and continues to screw up, his home state, and realize that they don’t want him screwing up the whole country any more than the current left wing democrats are already screwing it up.
