History’s Most Wasteful Military Spending? Office Decor That’s Fit For Royalty

-

While we're on the topic of the and how it spends all those hundreds of billions of dollars every year…it looks like they splurged on office furniture to the tune of more than a billion dollars. During the pandemic. When most of the workforce was doing its thing at home.

As Open the Books Adam Andrzejewski writes, the DOD wasn't the only part of the federal to spend big on office spaces and furnishings:

…in 2021, at the peak of the pandemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention spent $237,960 on solar powered picnic tables. We wonder if they included a social distancing app.  The State Department dialed up nearly $120,000 brand-new Ethan Allen leather recliners for its embassy in Islamabad.

The feds spent $26 million on furniture for their conference rooms, while their meetings were held on ZOOM. Spending included $700,000 by the Securities and Exchange Commission for their New York regional office conference room.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) spent nearly $250,000 on a conference room “refresh” with expensive, high-end Herman Miller furniture. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) purchased $284,000 in Herman Miller furniture for their headquarters conference center.

There's even more of this inexplicably bizarre spending at the link. All of it fuels the notion that Uncle Sam doesn't really have a revenue problem. The government's problem remains spending. Not just wasteful spending, but utterly useless spending. That there are still those in and around official Washington who insist spending can't be cut, that any cuts will weaken/harm/eliminate effective statecraft…tell that to the Marines living in squalid barracks while the bureaucrats at DARPA get new Herman Miller furniture (if they are in the office, that is).

But here's to the decorators at DARPA, and their affinity for Herman Miller furniture. At least they have an eye for design, even if they have no concept of restraint.

  1. The no-limit credit card needs to be confiscated from ALL federal depts and agencies….It might already be too late.

  2. The dems are addicted to spending other people’s money. They need to be called out and the price of the furniture that is over the average should come out of their pockets.
