Jasmine Crockett Says Crime Committed ‘Out Of Poverty’ Shouldn’t Be Prosecuted

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) created controversy this week after suggesting on a podcast that certain crimes committed out of poverty should not be prosecuted, particularly when people are “just trying to survive.” While on the surface this may sound like a measured and compassionate approach, critics warn it reflects the same line of logic that has led to surging crime, weakened rule of law, and a dangerous erosion of personal accountability in cities across America.

“Survival Crimes”

Speaking on the Grounded podcast on Wednesday, Crockett — a former public defender — made the case that poverty often drives people to commit crimes, and that not all criminal activity should be treated the same.

“There are crimes that are committed, not because people are criminals, but because they literally are trying to survive,” Crockett said.

She pointed to Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot, who made headlines for declaring he would not prosecute low-level theft cases involving essential items like food and diapers. Crockett admitted that Creuzot “probably shouldn’t have said it out loud,” but said she agreed with the thinking behind the policy.

“There is no good point in doing it because a decent defense attorney would have a defense,” she added.

The Real-World Cost of Soft-on-Crime Policies

Crockett’s remarks come at a time when many major American cities are grappling with crime waves, particularly among juvenile offenders emboldened by the knowledge that they won’t be meaningfully punished. The pattern is not theoretical — it’s playing out in real time.

Cities like Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. have all seen spikes in organized retail theft, carjackings, and violent assaults committed by minors, many of whom are released within hours — or never arrested at all. This breakdown in enforcement is often justified under the same rhetoric Crockett used: that the offenders are “just kids,” “just poor,” or “just trying to survive.”

But intentions don’t erase impact. When shoplifters clean out stores, neighborhoods lose access to basic goods. When carjackings spike, working-class people are the ones who suffer. And when lawmakers normalize criminality under the guise of compassion, they effectively encourage it.

A Slippery Slope to Excusing All Crime

Crockett’s defense of survival-based criminal activity may sound limited — theft of food, diapers, or necessities — but the logic easily spirals.

If stealing groceries is justifiable because someone claims they’re hungry, what about breaking into cars for money? Selling drugs to “feed their family?” Robbing a store because they’re out of work? At what point does “survival” become a catch-all excuse?

This is exactly the rationale that progressive prosecutors have embraced — often with disastrous results. In cities where similar policies have taken hold, crime rates haven’t gone down; they’ve surged. Businesses close, residents flee, and police grow demoralized, unable to enforce laws that politicians won’t back.

Crockett’s Record: A Pattern of Radicalism

Crockett’s podcast appearance is just the latest in a series of inflammatory and radical remarks from the freshman Democrat.

On MSNBC, the same day her podcast aired, she falsely claimed that President Donald Trump was “unlawfully going into various minority-controlled cities” with the National Guard — a claim not supported by any legal evidence.

In July, she told The Atlantic that her social media following made her the best candidate to lead Democrats on the House Oversight Committee. She later lost that race to Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA).

In a separate July interview, Crockett claimed “all violence” in American politics comes from Trump supporters — a statement contradicted by numerous left-wing attacks in recent months.

Earlier this year, she went viral for accusing Republicans of advancing “demonic” policies during a heated hearing on protecting women’s sports.

Despite these statements, Crockett continues to enjoy support from progressive circles. Former DNC vice chair David Hogg described her in May as “the type of leader we’re looking to support.”

Compassion Without Accountability Is Chaos

Declaring that theft or lawbreaking is excusable based on someone’s financial status is a shortcut to lawlessness, not justice.

Americans can and should fight poverty without rewriting the rules of criminal accountability. When lawmakers suggest otherwise, they send a clear message: your personal hardship gives you license to ignore the law.

It’s institutionalized anarchy — and cities across America are already paying the price.

With her life of privilege (attendance at elite schools etc) she has a lot of chutzpa saying that crimes committed ‘just to survive’ shouldn’t be prosecuted. I’ll wager that should some one of those just trying to survive types mugged her or broke into her house, she would be screeching about the po-po NOT protecting her and her stuff. After all, she’s ‘important’ or some such nonsense.

I thought we already addressed the poverty issue with food stamps and other handouts. Crockett needs to think before opening her mouth. Justifying crime in the name of poverty will just make life harder for everyone. Where do you draw the line on poverty and what would be acceptable crime? What an absolutely absurd idea.
