The House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a war powers resolution aimed at ending unauthorized U.S. military involvement in Iran, marking the most significant congressional challenge yet to President Donald Trump’s handling of the conflict.
The measure, sponsored by Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) invokes the 1973 War Powers Resolution and would require the administration to obtain explicit authorization from Congress before continuing hostilities against Iran, except in cases involving an imminent threat to the United States. The vote followed months of growing bipartisan concern over a conflict that began in.

He may get what he wants, but that could lead to World War III. As Vladimir “Vlad the Invader” Putin sees his advantage in Ukraine slowly evaporating, he appears to be trying to provoke a direct confrontation with NATO.
This, while testing the Alliance’s commitment to Article 5 of its charter, which says that an attack on one member shall be considered an attack on all members, requiring joint response.
President Trump appears to finally be getting tired of Russia’s aggression, disparaging Russia’s military as a “paper tiger” and backing Ukraine’s hope to retake all its Russian-occupied territory as very possible, dramatically changing Putin’s calculus and raising the risk.
Putin’s most recent escalation against NATO members began with a volley of 19-20 Russian drones that passed over Ukraine and penetrated Polish airspace, and Romanian fighters detected a Russian version of the Iranian-designed Shahed kamikaze drone, in their airspace. Poland says it shot down several of the Russian drones, the first time a NATO country is known to have directly fired on Russia since it invaded Ukraine.
And the Kremlin kept ramping up from there.
On Monday, Denmark’s main airport in the capital, Copenhagen, was closed down after at least two drones were spotted at the airport. Danish prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, said it was the most “most serious attack on Danish critical infrastructure to date.”
Meanwhile, almost concurrently, Oslo’s main airport also had to close down after drones were spotted there. Authorities have not said whether the incidents were linked, but it is highly likely.
On Tuesday, Norway’s government said Russia, with which it shares a sparsely populated northern border, had violated its airspace on three occasions in 2025, in April, July, and August.
While the Norwegian government said that it was not clear if it was accidental on the Kremlin’s part or a calculated provocation, the latter is again most likely. (RELATED: War In Space? China And Russia Pose Real Threat)
And now, Estonia called an emergency meeting of NATO after the Baltic country said its airspace had been violated by Russian jets.
NATO quickly issued a statement saying that three Russian MiG-31 aircraft entered Estonian airspace over Vaindloo Island in the Gulf of Finland and stayed there for more than 10 minutes before they were intercepted and forced to retreat.
The warplanes reportedly flew without flight plans and with their transponders turned off.
The NATO statement also said that Finland, Latvia, and Lithuania, all of which neighbor Russia, and were formerly occupied by the Soviet Union, experienced airspace violations, too.
And while the NATO statement did not explicitly promise to shoot down any future Russian aircraft entering NATO airspace, NATO chief Mark Rutte said that future assessments about whether Russian jets need to be shot down will be made “in real time, based on available intelligence regarding the threat posed by the aircraft.”
He added, however, that, “if necessary, you can be assured, we will do what is necessary to defend our cities, our people, our infrastructure.” As part of that commitment, NATO is deploying forces for Operation Eastern Sentry, designed to counter the growing threat of Russian air incursions on its eastern flank.
Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk was much clearer in his response to Russian incursions, saying: “We will decide to shoot down flying objects without discussion when they violate our territory and fly over Poland. There is no room for debate here.”
While Trump initially said the Russian drone incursions into Poland might have been a mistake, in response to the Russian fighters’ incursion into Estonia, Trump said: “I don’t love it. I don’t like when that happens. Could be big trouble.”
And now Germany’s defense minister Boris Pistorius claimed that Russian jets just provoked a German navy frigate in the Baltic Sea during the ongoing NATO exercise “Neptune Strike,” prompting him to say:
The incursion of Russian drones and warplanes deep into Polish and Estonian airspace, as well as the overflight of a German frigate in the Baltic Sea in recent days, make it clear that Russia is literally testing the boundaries with increasing frequency and intensity.
He added that all these incursions into NATO airspace by Russian military aircraft were a deliberate strategy by Putin to identify, expose, and exploit potential weaknesses in the NATO alliance.
But he also noted Germany’s restraint:
The NATO alliance has responded to Russian provocations in a clear and decisive manner, while at the same time exercising the necessary prudence that is particularly important these days. We are thus showing a clear response to Russian behavior, but without alarmism. In other words, we are not falling for Putin’s provocations; we are not falling into this trap of escalation.
However, Germany’s choice of restraint may not win the day across NATO. While talking to Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky at the U.N., Trump was asked whether he thought NATO should shoot down any Russian planes that entered NATO airspace.
“Yes, I do,” Trump replied, raising the likelihood of a military response. Putin may not be getting the reaction he expected.

Where all this will lead is the big question, but a bigger war with Russia is definitely a possibility.
