Good morning.

Congress is mounting its strongest challenge yet to President Trump’s Iran War, federal prosecutors have unveiled a sanctions-evasion case tied to Iran’s nuclear program, and investigators in Washington, D.C., are digging deeper into allegations that police officials manipulated crime statistics.

The House of Representatives voted Wednesday to approve a war powers resolution to limit unauthorized American military involvement in Iran.

Sponsored by Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York, the measure would require the White House.

PAUL’S DEFENSE BRIEF (PDB) – But are they just exaggerating the possibility for political reasons? Eleven retired U.S. generals warned that recent and proposed National Guard deployments could [emphasis added] “undermine” the military’s reputation as a trusted institution and harm troop morale.

“A military that is thrust into aggressive interactions with civilians in a politicized context will, over time, inevitably lose the respect and trust that it currently has among the American people,” the former generals wrote in a brief filed in a California court.

“This disapproval from fellow Americans can only exacerbate feelings of isolation and low morale for the military deployed.”

While the brief was filed in a case focused on the L.A. mission, the former generals warned of potential “harm” that could arise from the Guard’s current deployment to Washington, D.C., and potential activations that Trump has hinted at for New York City, Baltimore, New Orleans, Chicago, and Oakland, California.

The former generals argue that the federalization of the National Guard could [emphasis added] erode the military’s apolitical reputation since troops have been put in an “untenable position” with a deployment that has been “deeply politicized.”

However, please note that the filed brief was led by the Vet Voice Foundation which claims to be nonpartisan but is led by a left-wing lesbian former Marine officer who ran for office as a Democrat and is a Gov. Gavin Newsom appointee. The group is allied with various left-wing groups.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY – Here’s a roundup of today’s other top defense stories ending the week from conservative national security expert PAUL CRESPO.

Not the President’s Daily Brief, but almost as good – PAUL’S DEFENSE BRIEFING – the PDB:

NATIONAL SECURITY

Air Force may be forced to keep operating its already half-century-old Minuteman III nuclear missiles until 2050, as the replacement Sentinel program continues to run into continuous delays.

Lawmakers accuse DOD officials of ‘lack of transparency’ over UFO sightings by military as veterans’ report firsthand of UFO sightings at a dramatic hearing by a special House task force collecting evidence on “unidentified anomalous phenomena.”

Joint Chiefs chairman wants ‘global risk algorithm’ to help commanders and DOD decision-makers measure, understand and manage threats as they confront pressing security challenges in multiple regions around the world.

HOMELAND SECURITY

Manhunt for Charlie Kirk killer continues as Trump says it is ‘dark moment for America.’ The prominent 31-year-old father of two, unapologetic Christian, and conservative youth activist was assassinated with a hunting rifle as he spoke at a university in Utah.

Democratic senator will attempt this week to block DOD from providing full military funeral honors to the veteran killed by Capitol Police while being pushed into a breach leading to the House floor during the Capitol riots on Jan. 6, 2021.

Coast Guard’s Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron (HITRON) completed its 1,000th interdiction of suspected narco-trafficking vessels on Aug. 25.

DOD to study the feasibility of installing collision-avoidance systems on all U.S. military helicopters.

DEFENSE POLITICS

Washington Post editorial points to the nineteen mentions of “climate” in the 2022 National Defense Strategy. The op-ed suggests that previous administrations made fighting climate change “the military’s job” at the expense of its traditional focus on deterring conflict and, when necessary, winning wars. Nothing could be further from the truth.

House lawmakers approved plans for a $893 billion defense authorization bill despite strong objections from Democrats about social issue fights and a lack of restrictions on presidential use of the National Guard.

Chairman of the House Appropriations defense subcommittee is raising alarms about the prospect of a long-term stopgap funding bill for fiscal 2026, warning against repeating a yearlong Continuing Resolution that’s already shown to be “damaging” to DOD.

US POWER OVERSEAS

Marine Corps MV-22B Osprey tiltrotors will stay in Australia when a rotational force returns home this fall.

U.S. Air Force B-2 stealth bomber, alongside Norwegian aircraft, sank a maritime target last week with a new precision-guided bomb in the service’s latest effort to integrate anti-ship munitions amid naval threats from Russia and China.

Drone-filled skies give Bavaria military drill a new look and U.S. soldiers a glimpse of changed warfare.

Deploying jets to hung drug cartels isn’t new. With the current growing tensions between Venezuela and the U.S., it’s worth recalling a little-known aerial mission that the U.S. military launched to interdict narcotics coming out of Central and South America back in the 1990s.

MIDDLE EAST THREATS

What do we know about Israeli strike on Hamas in Qatar.

Planet Labs has collected satellite images that show the level of precision in yesterday’s unprecedented Israeli airstrike on a Hamas compound in Doha, Qatar.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has threatened to try to kill Hamas leaders in Qatar again if Doha does not expel the group’s officials, drawing a sharp response from Doha.

Qatar’s prime minister has said that Benjamin Netanyahu “killed any hope” for the remaining hostages in Gaza following Israel’s extraordinary strike on Hamas negotiators in Doha.

As the dust settles in the Qatari capital of Doha following an airstrike by Israel against Hamas figures, experts say the escalation by Jerusalem and will have a longer-term effect of delaying progress in the normalization of relations between Israel and other Gulf nations.

CHINA THREAT

U.S. counter-drone defenses ‘insufficient’ as China scales up unmanned capabilities. This, even as DOD has significantly invested in counter-drone capabilities over the past decade.

RUSSIA THREAT

Poland says up to four of 19 Russian drones shot down after entering airspace.

Poland, allies rushed to protect its airspace after Russian violations. Russian “drone-type objects” were struck down after they “repeatedly violated” Polish airspace.

NATO must draw a red line after Russian drones over Poland. Russia has once again crossed a dangerous line in its war against Ukraine—this time, by sending more than a dozen drones into NATO territory.

Poland is set to utilize almost one-third of a EU $176 billion debt fund for defense spending, as concerns grow over Russian aggression.

The last time Russia and Belarus held major joint military drills in 2022, Moscow sent its troops into Ukraine just days later. Now the two close allies are conducting war games again, raising tensions anew in the region.

SPACE THREATS

Air Force test pilot will lead a four-person NASA crew living for a year inside a simulated Mars habitat as the space agency gears up for future long-term flights.

Space Development Agency launched its first initial batch of operational satellites, kicking off a 10-month campaign to deliver more than 150 satellites to low Earth orbit.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

As its interminable wait for nuclear-powered submarines continues, Australia has lodged an order with Anduril Australia for a number of state-of-the-art unmanned submarines to be delivered over the coming five years.

Germany’s Rheinmetall plans to expand its loitering strike drone business, unveiling a new family of systems that could initially swell to 1,000 units produced this year.

Royal Navy will switch to an operational mantra of fielding uncrewed vessels over crewed options whenever possible.

When the UK rolled out its Strategic Defense Review (SDR) in June, it contained something of a surprise: Unlike previously, this SDR provided plenty of focus on UK Special Forces (UKSF).

US MILITARY

Anduril wants the U.S. Navy to take advantage of its rapidly developed autonomous undersea vessel Ghost Shark XLUUV that Australia is purchasing.

USAF’s Quicksink ship-killing smart bomb seen in detail. The modified 2,000-pound-class GBU-31 Joint Direct Attack Munition, or JDAM, has been optimized for use as an anti-ship munition, part of the Air Force’s pursuit of a lower-cost means of bolstering its capacity to launch strikes on enemy ships.

Coast Guard moved to accelerate the acquisition of 10 more Fast Response Cutters using money from the record $25 billion one-time funding it received in the 2025 reconciliation bill passed by Congress.

Soldiers who score a 465 or better on the Army Fitness Test will not be subject to flagging actions for body fat percentage.
