ANALYSIS – New questions are being raised about the botched law enforcement response to the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania last month.
This, as lawmakers from a bipartisan task force investigating the assassination attempt visited the shooting scene in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Monday, Aug. 26.
While most of us saw the fast-thinking bravery of the agents directly protecting Trump as the shots rang out, many of the questions revolve around what law enforcement did, or failed to do, in the time leading up to the attack.
This especially includes why the rooftop the shooter used wasn't secured. (RELATED: Congressman Reveals Encrypted Messaging Locations Used By Would-Be Trump Assassin)
Fox News reported that ranking member of the task force Jason Crow (D-Colo.) a decorated former Army Ranger who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, told reporters at the site that among other goals, the group hopes to help restore confidence in Americans that their leaders are protected.
“I definitely took note today that there were a lot of lines of sight that appear to have been unsecured,” he said. “And certainly, at this point, a lot more questions than answers.”
But there were many other failures. (RELATED: New Secret Service Decision Raises Questions – Should Trump Be Worried?)
Republican Pennsylvania Rep. Mike Kelly, chairman of the House task force, questioned what appears to have been a “frozen” response from law enforcement when they first spotted gunman Thomas Crooks.
The shooter was on the rally grounds for at least 70 minutes the morning of the attack and flew a drone over the area for about 10 minutes that afternoon.
One recently released video shows Crooks walking around vendors at the rally site hours before the shooting.
Text messages obtained by Republican Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley show that law enforcement snipers spotted Crooks 90 minutes prior to him opening fire on the former president.
Kelly's comments came after his second visit to the site of the assassination attempt at the Butler Farm Show fairgrounds in Butler, Pennsylvania, where Crooks shot at Trump during the former president's campaign rally on July 13, killing one attendee and severely wounding two others.
“I just want to know, who was quarterbacking it? Who was the one that made the decision? … And when the sniper already had the shooter in his sights and, what we've heard so far, he was waiting to get authorization to take the shot. … Some quarterback's got to make that call. If they're not making that call, the team can't move. And that's what I see here. It was kind of frozen for a while,” Kelly told Fox News Digital.
Kelly, who is originally from the Butler area, added that he believes it is too early to tell if there was any kind of criminal negligence in the assassination attempt.
So far, the FBI has not been able to determine a motive for the attempt on Trump's life or whether he had any co-conspirators.

Why are we not hearing anything about the person with the cell phone who Crooks had at his home numerous times? And who was the person he met for four days in the northeast and for what purpose? And who did he meet in Washington, D.C. and what was the purpose of the meeting? Those questions should yield easy answers for the intelligence community which we are told copies all private U.S. phone calls, text messages, etc.
