Trump Turns Fire On Pope – And His Own Base

President Trump’s increasingly hostile outbursts and worsening temperament are being used by Democrats to call for his removal from office via the 25th Amendment. While I think that is preposterous — especially after their ignoring and covering up a brain dead Joe Biden for four years in the White House — I do have some concerns.

I will ignore his increasingly contradictory and often incomprehensible running commentary on just about everything, all the time, and just focus on his picking dumb fights and alienating friends and supporters.

Let’s start with Trump’s feud with Pope Leo XIV, most recently regarding the Iran war. The new pope, an American, is clearly a liberal who also brings the Church’s more liberal post-WWII teachings into his views.

It’s no surprise that he would openly dismiss Trumpian takes on the Iran war.

As a Catholic myself, I think Leo may be too prone to get into political topics beyond the core teachings of the Gospels and the Church. As a conservative, I also disagree with his liberal views on several topics, including Iran. And I will openly criticize his positions.

Being an American also makes the pope more attuned (or hypersensitive) to U.S. politics in the age of Trump, and not in a good way.

But Leo has his role, and he has a right to express his views. Trump shouldn’t personally attack and pick a personal fight with the spiritual leader of 1.4 billion Catholics globally, and 53 million in the U.S., with over 55% of them here voting for Trump.

I prefer VP Vance’s approach where he makes intelligent counterarguments to the pope’s statements, without being insulting or overtly disrespectful. While Trump has always used this pugnacious insult schtick, it’s getting a bit stale. And overdone.

I see him getting far more aggressive and ill-tempered recently, likely aggravated by age and frustration, creating unnecessary backlashes among friends and allies.

And this brings me to a related topic, Trump’s foolish attacks on loyal supporters who simply call him out when they disagree with something he said or did.

Trump just savaged Riley Gaines, the former student athlete and anti-trans activist, a stalwart MAGA supporter, and someone he has called “tremendous,” for questioning Trump’s Jesus-like AI image of himself he posted online. To many Christians, this bordered on blasphemy. He later removed that post.

Gaines also previously questioned Trump’s handling of the Epstein files.

Still, the last thing Trump needs is to alienate his most ardent supporters going into a potential Democrat blue wave midterm election in November. Despite Gaines’ respectful tone and sincere desire to stay on the Trump Team, the president basically disowned her over one critical comment.

This, after Trump righty bashed onetime allies, now fringe “conservative” backstabbers, like Tucker Carlson, Alex Jones, Candace Owen, and Megyn Kelly over their nonstop, and very personal, attacks on him over Iran and some other issues.

I earlier bashed them myself. But there is a huge difference between them and Gaines.

Within a day or two, Trump also lashed out at one of his strongest, out of a small few, supporters in Europe, conservative Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, over Italy’s decision to not support the U.S. in its war against Iran.

A staunch Catholic, she was also angered by Trump’s attacks on the pope.

Meloni’s decision on Iran was likely influenced by domestic electoral factors, after a recent political defeat, but Trump’s lashing likely influenced her decision to end a defense agreement with Israel the next day. Expect her to distance herself more from Trump.

While I remain solidly pro-Trump and wish him great success during the rest of his term (he has earned it), I am concerned about his worsening temperament and maybe judgement.  He should take a step back and breathe. The GOP and America need him at his best, now more than ever.

Trump should be angry at a very political, liberal pope in Rome. Pope Leo objected to f U.S. military operations in Iran following a meeting with David Axelrod, a longtime Democrat Party operative & Obama advisor. Obama helped fuel the current conflict with Iran, freeing up $150 BILLION in frozen Iranian assets & sent a planeload of cash (another $1.7 BILLION) to Tehran. Iran’s fanatical Islamic dictators did not abandon their nuclear ambitions or weapons development after Obama’s failed attempts at diplomacy (or bribery). Iranian aid to the Houthis threatens our naval fleet, our allies’ ships and global commerce (U.S. imports & exports are valued in many TRILLIONS$$)… now the mad mullahs seek to impose $2 million fees on ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian high tech IEDs were shipped to Iraq & Afghanistan, where IEDs killed & maimed thousands of U.S. soldiers. Trump’s military strikes are a “just war” to curtail Tehran’s nuclear threat & respond to human rights atrocities the regime committed– killing some 35,000 protestors in January. In 2022, nationwide protests erupted after young Mahsa Amini was beaten to death in jail because her hijab wasn’t fitted properly. The regime hunted down survivors from gunshot wounds in hospitals & reportedly also doctors & nurses who cared for the wounded. The regime hanged handsome young 19 yr old athlete, Saleh Mohammadi, an international wrestling champion, for attending a January protest & other teenagers are now being hanged. This is an evil, barbaric regime which smears the U.S. as “the Great Satan.” Trump’s duty-bound as Commander-in-Chief, to protect citizens against such threats. He’s won support of Gulf States who also understand the danger Iran poses. This pope chose to live in Peru– he’s not very American. He also criticized U.S. immigration policy unjustly. He & other leftist Catholics prefer Open Borders with unvetted migrants descending on the U.S. as they did under senile Joe Biden, by the millions, in a power-crazed attempt by Democrats to create a new voter base. Radical Democrats can’t get enough red-blooded Americans to vote for socialism and a one-party state so they needed to import new voters. If the Pope hates walls and immigration constraints, he should get rid of the massive, ancient wall that protects the Vatican and his Swiss Guards.
