Does President Donald Trump make national security staffing decisions based on research compiled by right-wing activists? Maybe he does. And maybe he should. Especially if the White House’s own vetting has been lax.
But the reasons should be valid.
Following a White House visit from activist journalist Laura Loomer, up to 10 officials from Trump’s National Security Council (NSC) were fired over loyalty concerns or not supporting the MAGA agenda. In a related move the general leading both the National Security Agency (NSA) and U.S. Cyber Command and his civilian deputy were also fired.

Trump’s move may also lead to the NSA and CYBERCOM being led by separate officials. The signals intelligence giant and the combatant command have been led by one general in a dual-hatted role, but Trump officials have discussed separating them.
Loomer reportedly presented in-depth opposition research on several White House staffers to the president. The New York Times said she was armed with “receipts” aimed at proving a number of staffers were disloyal to the president.
While Trump didn’t credit Loomer, he told reporters aboard Air Force One: “We’re always going to let go of people—people we don’t like or people that take advantage of or people that may have loyalties to someone else.”
Others said the firings were “being labeled as an anti-neocon move.” Some ultra MAGA folks often use that term to disparage those with more traditionally conservative foreign policy views, but I’m not sure they should be considered enemies.
The Daily Wire reported that:
Loomer was angry that “neocons” had “slipped through” the Trump administration’s vetting process, saying: “She went to the White House yesterday and presented them with her research and evidence.” The official also said that three senior NSC members had been fired, and as many as ten staff members had been fired total, warning that it was looking like a “bloodbath.”
CNN reported Thursday that three of those fired are Brian Walsh, Thomas Boodry, and David Feith. Walsh was director for intelligence and a former staffer for Marco Rubio. Boodry was a senior director for legislative affairs who formerly served as Mike Waltz’s legislative director in Congress. Feith was a senior director overseeing technology and national security matters who had previously served in the State Department under the first Trump administration.
National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, Vice President JD Vance, Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, and director of the Presidential Personnel Office Sergio Gor also took part in the meeting, the Associated Press reported. Axios reported that Loomer did not believe the staff she presented to Trump were sufficiently loyal to his agenda.
“It was a remarkable spectacle: Ms. Loomer, a Sept. 11 conspiracy theorist who is viewed as extreme even by some of Mr. Trump’s far-right allies, apparently wielding more influence over the staff of the National Security Council than Mr. [Michael] Waltz, who runs the agency,” The New York Times reported.
Loomer once suggested that the September 11 attacks were an inside job, prompting even some MAGA Trump supporters to say she is sometimes “extreme.”
Meanwhile, Gen. Timothy Haugh, the four-star director of America’s powerful wiretapping and cyberespionage services, was also booted along with NSA deputy Wendy Noble. She was reassigned to a job within the Pentagon’s Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security which also oversees the NSA.
“NSA Director Tim Haugh and his deputy Wendy Noble have been disloyal to President Trump,” Loomer said in a post on X early Friday. “That is why they have been fired.”

Loomer also told The Washington Post that she urged Trump to dismiss Haugh because he was “handpicked” by Gen. Mark A. Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 2023 when Haugh was nominated to lead Cyber Command and the NSA.
Milley was ultimately openly disloyal and critical of Trump, referring to him as a “wannabe dictator.”
The Post added that Democratic leaders of the House and Senate intelligence committees were quick to criticize Trump’s move:
Sen. Mark R. Warner of Virginia, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, said Haugh served with distinction.
“At a time when the United States is facing unprecedented cyberthreats, as the Salt Typhoon cyberattack from China has so clearly underscored, how does firing him make Americans any safer?” Warner said in a statement.
“I am deeply disturbed by the decision” to remove Haugh, Rep. Jim Himes (D-Connecticut), Warner’s counterpart in the House, said in a statement.
But Loomer countered by saying in a follow-up post:
Look at the people who are crying about my meeting with President Trump and the firing of NSC AND NSA officials today. The people crying are the people who worked to undermine Donald Trump, members of the Democrat Party, and the mainstream media.

Great job Donald, Now get rid of those heartless Generals and others (Communist Rats) in the Pentagon that are giving orders for the Air Force pilots to poison our air and environment with daily spraying of TOXIC CHEMICALS all over the U.S. These people in the Pentagon should all be arrested and prosecuted immediately! What they have done to our planet so far is totally unforgivable, AND JUST “TOTALLY INHUMANE!”.
