PAUL’S DEFENSE BRIEF (PDB) – Venezuela prepares for potential U.S. attack with armed drones designed by Iran. As the Caracas regime declares it will deploy drones to defend itself amid growing tensions triggered by the dispatch of more than half a dozen powerful U.S. warships to the waters off its Caribbean coast, few people know the details of how Venezuela developed one of Latin America’s most advanced unmanned aircraft programs.
Fewer still know that the drones, though built on Venezuelan soil, are controlled to some extent by Iran.
The long-standing links between Caracas and Tehran have been a source of contention as the Venezuelan regime has allowed Hezbollah, an Iran-controlled terrorist group, to use the Latin American country as an entry point into the region.
The U.S. has published analyses on the “new asymmetric threat” posed by drones in the hands of an Iranian-allied regime. The main concern is that it could transfer technology to other governments or to criminal and paramilitary organizations in the region.
There is also concern that the Teheran-Caracas relationship might turn the South American country into an important center for the production of Iran’s kamikaze drones.
