McALLEN, Texas — Eddy Betancourt, 61, a well-known businessman and longtime public servant who was appointed by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to the Texas Facilities Commission, was fatally shot over the weekend in McAllen.
McAllen police were called to a business in the 800 block of North Ware Road shortly after 3:40 p.m. Saturday, following a 911 report that a man was found on the floor, possibly shot. Officers found Betancourt unresponsive with an apparent gunshot wound and later pronounced him dead.
Betancourt served as vice chairman of the Hidalgo County Appraisal District Board of Directors and was appointed by Abbott to the Texas Facilities Commission in 2020, with a 2023 reappointment for a term through January 2029. He also led several local companies, including R&B General Construction Co., Inc., and National Tire and Wheel LLC.
Police have classified the death as a homicide and are actively investigating. A suspect, 60-year-old Reynaldo Mata-Rios, has been identified, and a first-degree murder warrant has been issued, but he remains at large as of Tuesday afternoon. Authorities previously said Mata-Rios had indicated he would surrender but had not done so.

Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez called him a “tireless advocate” whose leadership made a “lasting impact” on the county, Fox 4 KDFW reported.
Police haven’t revealed a motive for the shooting. Federal, state, and local agencies are searching for Mata-Rios.

When we have legislators who’s only goal is to remove a sitting POTUS from Californa, and lies constantly, and dosen’t even live there, we have a problem. When we have a legislator who obviously is doing insider trading and yet nobody addresses the issue, we have a problem. When we have a legislators who are so old they are oblivious and need to be pushed around in whlle chairs we have a problem. When we have candidates who have run and failed several time, then hides in his basement during campaign season, yet wins, we have a problem. Who is really running this nation?
