LOS ANGELES — “Batwoman” and “Orange Is the New Black” star Ruby Rose has publicly accused pop star Katy Perry of sexual assault, alleging the incident occurred nearly two decades ago at a nightclub in Melbourne, Australia.
The actress made the claim in a series of social media posts, saying the alleged incident took place when she was in her early twenties.
Rose’s allegation surfaced Sunday in response to a Complex Music post about Katy Perry’s reaction to Justin Bieber’s widely criticized Coachella performance. Related coverage also highlighted Perry’s appearance at the festival with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
“Katy Perry sexual assaulted me at Spice Market nightclub in Melbourne,” Rose wrote in response. “Who gives a s**t what she thinks.”
According to Rose, the alleged incident occurred during the early stages of both women’s careers. She claimed to have evidence and said others witnessed the event.
After a fan asked for more details, Rose described the alleged incident in graphic terms in a follow-up post.
“She didn’t kiss me. She saw me ‘resting’ on my best friend’s lap to avoid her, then bent down, pulled her underwear to the side, and rubbed her disgusting vagina on my face until my eyes snapped open and I projectile vomited on her.”
In a follow-up response to another fan, Rose said she initially downplayed the encounter when speaking about it publicly.
“After it I threw up on her, I told the story publicly but changed it to be a ‘funny little drunk story’ because I didn’t know how else to handle it,” she wrote. “Later she agreed to help me get my US visa. So I kept it a secret. But I DID tell yall she wasn’t a good person.”
Rose, who identifies as gender-fluid and primarily uses she/her pronouns, is now 40.
She said it took “almost two decades” to speak publicly about the allegation, citing the long-term effects of trauma.
Rose also stated she recently reported the incident to police, though authorities have not publicly confirmed any investigation.
Katy Perry’s representatives have denied the allegation. In a statement reported by Variety, Perry’s team described the claims as “categorically false and dangerous lies.”
The denial marks the first formal response from Perry’s side following the viral spread of the accusation.
Rose and Perry have had prior public tensions, including social media disputes dating back to the late 2010s. The resurfacing of those disagreements has added to the attention surrounding the allegation.
Perry has also been a vocal political figure in recent years. She was a prominent supporter of Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election and has consistently opposed President Donald Trump and his policies. Following Trump’s 2016 victory, Perry encouraged protests on social media, writing, “We will never be silenced” and “Rise up.” She later performed at the 2017 Grammy Awards wearing a “resist” armband.
Perry has continued to align with Democratic candidates, including endorsing Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in the 2020 and 2024 elections.
The accusation has drawn widespread attention online but remains unproven. It is unclear whether the matter will lead to legal proceedings.
