An American tourist was killed after being caught in the middle of a violent gun battle involving Mexican troops in one of Mexico’s most popular beach destinations, authorities said.
The 31-year-old California man was among five civilian bystanders struck when a firefight erupted late Saturday near the Costa Dorada neighborhood of San José del Cabo — part of the upscale Los Cabos resort corridor frequented by American vacationers, according to the Baja California Sur State Attorney General’s Office.
The deadly clash unfolded along the Transpeninsular Highway just before midnight after local police encountered what officials described as an “ongoing armed confrontation,” prosecutors said.
The California man was rushed to a hospital but later succumbed to his injuries, authorities said.
Among the other civilians wounded were a 14-year-old boy suffering gunshot wounds and a 65-year-old woman who sustained a life-threatening injury to her leg. A 35-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman were also hurt during the chaos, according to investigators.
Two Mexican soldiers were also shot.
Officials said a 20-year-old member of Mexico’s Ministry of National Defense suffered life-threatening gunshot wounds, while a 25-year-old soldier sustained less severe injuries. Two additional soldiers took up defensive positions near a pickup truck that had been riddled with bullets, authorities said.
Investigators later recovered a cache of weapons from the scene, including high-caliber firearms, multiple loaded magazines, tactical gear and a rifle-mounted grenade launcher attachment.
The Baja California Sur Attorney General’s Office said it has opened an investigation into homicide and attempted homicide and is working to identify those responsible.
The bloodshed rattled a region heavily dependent on tourism and came amid renewed security concerns in Baja California Sur.
Local officials announced increased coordination with federal forces and additional security measures following the shooting.
Los Cabos — home to luxury resorts, celebrity vacation homes and some of Mexico’s most visited beaches — has periodically been hit by cartel-related violence despite its image as a high-end tourist haven. In April 2025, the U.S. Embassy issued a security alert for Los Cabos, San José del Cabo and La Paz after reports of shootouts, bus burnings, homicides and cartel threats against officials in the state.
Authorities have not publicly identified the slain American pending notification of family members.
