Newly released body camera footage captures the dramatic moment a Washington SWAT team used a chainsaw to cut through the wall of an apartment before arresting a man accused of carrying out a violent assault at a homeless encampment.
Authorities say the suspect allegedly struck a woman in the head with a propane tank during the attack, leaving her with severe injuries. The tense standoff ended only after negotiators failed to convince him to surrender and officers launched a tactical breach.
Violent assault sparked massive police response
The incident began after Thurston County deputies responded to reports of a felony assault at “The Jungle,” a sprawling homeless encampment in Olympia.
The roughly 21-acre site, located between Martin Way and Pacific Avenue, is home to an estimated 200 people and sits on a patchwork of city, state, and privately owned land. The encampment has drawn repeated attention from local officials because of violent crime, large amounts of debris, and pollution affecting nearby waterways.
Investigators said the suspect allegedly attacked a woman by striking her in the head with a propane tank.
According to Officer.com, the assault caused significant injuries that authorities said could result in permanent disfigurement.
Suspect barricaded himself inside apartment
After the assault, deputies tracked the suspect to an apartment, where he barricaded himself inside.
Because of his violent criminal history and an active escape warrant, authorities deployed a SWAT team and crisis negotiators in an effort to end the standoff peacefully.
Negotiators attempted to persuade the suspect to surrender, but those efforts ultimately failed.
Chainsaw breach ends standoff
Body camera footage shows officers escalating their tactics after negotiations broke down.
SWAT personnel used a chainsaw to cut through an exterior wall while also firing a pepper spray projectile into the apartment to force the suspect from his position.
Authorities said the suspect responded by throwing objects at officers and attempting to start a fire inside the apartment complex, creating an even greater danger for responding deputies and nearby residents.
The confrontation finally ended after a police K-9 was deployed, allowing officers to take the suspect into custody.
Multiple felony charges
The suspect was arrested on suspicion of several crimes, including felony assault and arson.
Authorities have not released additional details about the victim’s condition beyond saying her injuries are serious and could leave permanent disfigurement.
The footage provides a rare look at the tactics officers used during the high-risk operation, highlighting how quickly the situation escalated from a violent assault investigation into a dangerous barricade that required specialized SWAT resources to resolve.
