Ex-Gambino Enforcer And New Jersey Lawmaker Charged In Alleged Extortion Scheme

The pre-dawn raid began shortly after 5 a.m.

Nearly two dozen tactical officers moved through a quiet Englishtown neighborhood last Friday before converging on the home of borough Councilman John Alite, a former Gambino crime family associate who once claimed to have participated in as many as 15 murders before attempting to reinvent himself as a local elected official.

Doorbell video captured the heavily armed officers walking down residential streets before executing the arrest.

By the end of the morning, Alite — once one of the most notorious figures connected to New York organized crime — was back in handcuffs and facing allegations that prosecutors say resemble the tactics of his former life.

New Jersey authorities accuse Alite of participating in a loan-sharking and extortion scheme that allegedly involved high-interest loans, threats of violence, and demands for money and property.

The charges mark a dramatic turn for an elected official who had spent years presenting himself as a reformed former mob enforcer. (RELATED: Former ‘Tonight Show’ Host Addresses Mafia Connection Allegations)

Multiple charges filed

According to the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, Alite faces several serious charges, including theft by extortion, corporate misconduct, usury, and terroristic threats.

Authorities also arrested 67-year-old Stephen Locrotondo of Bridgewater. Prosecutors tied him to conspiracy and usury charges connected to the alleged operation.

Investigators say the scheme involved loans carrying annual interest rates exceeding 50%.

According to court documents, prosecutors allege borrowers were later threatened in an effort to force repayment through cash, property, or other assets.

Authorities claim Alite used his company, Straightened-Out Entertainment, as part of the operation and earned at least $75,000 through the alleged scheme.

Alleged threats mirror mob past

Several of the allegations have drawn particular attention because of Alite’s criminal history. (RELATED: Unforgettable Demise Of NYC Mobster Caught On Camera)

According to NJ.com, prosecutors allege Alite threatened to strike one victim in the head with a baseball bat.

Investigators also cited threats involving violence against debtors, including references to gutting people “like fish.”

During searches of Alite’s residence, authorities recovered a large collection of weapons.

According to reports, investigators seized:

  • Six baseball bats.
  • Approximately two dozen knives, including switchblades.
  • Two slapjacks.
  • Metal knuckles.
  • An expandable baton.

Prosecutors believe some of the items may be connected to the alleged intimidation tactics described in the investigation.

A violent past returns to the spotlight

The allegations have renewed attention on Alite’s lengthy criminal history.

For years, he was closely associated with the Gambino crime family and later became a government witness after cooperating with federal authorities.

In previous interviews, Alite openly discussed his involvement in organized crime.

A 2015 television interview drew national attention after he claimed responsibility for numerous violent acts during his years in the mob.

Alite said he had participated in multiple killings, dozens of shootings, and over 100 beatings during his criminal career.

His cooperation eventually resulted in a reduced prison sentence.

After leaving prison, Alite reinvented himself as a motivational speaker, author, anti-drug advocate, and local political figure.

His election to the Englishtown Borough Council was viewed by some supporters as evidence that rehabilitation was possible.

Local officials express surprise

The charges appear to have caught some local officials off guard.

Englishtown Councilwoman Janet Leonardis told NJ.com that she was stunned by the allegations.

“I absolutely have no idea what that’s about, so I can’t comment,” Leonardis said. “I can tell you I’m surprised because he’s been an excellent citizen and councilman.”

Alite’s attorney, Douglas Anton, strongly defended his client and argued that he left organized crime behind years ago.

“John has lived a law-abiding life since leaving behind ‘that’ life almost two decades ago,” Anton told the New York Post.

Anton also suggested that Alite’s outspoken political views may have contributed to the attention surrounding the case.

“John is outspoken politically and fights tirelessly for what he believes in,” Anton said. “This sometimes draws the attention of differing viewpoints which, in modern times, could lead to people in power taking positions that may not be genuine.”

A second act under scrutiny

For much of the past decade, Alite built a public identity around redemption.

He spoke at schools.

He appeared on podcasts and television programs.

He discussed his years in organized crime as cautionary tales for younger audiences.

The new allegations threaten to unravel much of that second act.

Prosecutors argue the conduct described in the indictment closely resembles the methods historically associated with organized crime: high-interest loans, threats of violence, and intimidation used to collect debts.

Defense attorneys maintain the accusations do not reflect the man Alite has become since leaving prison.

No court date has been announced.

For now, one of New Jersey’s most unusual political figures finds himself facing the legal system once again — this time not as a former mob enforcer recounting his past, but as a sitting councilman accused of returning to it.
