Indicted Former San Antonio Officer Joins Flood Rescue Despite Imminent Trial

Former San Antonio police officer and decorated Army veteran James Brennand is preparing to stand trial on charges stemming from an on-duty incident that many say has been politicized by anti-police forces.

Brennand, who served in the U.S. Army before joining the San Antonio Police Department, is accused of using excessive force during a confrontation with a suspect in a reported stolen vehicle. According to case records, the vehicle backed into Brennand, prompting him to open fire. The suspect survived, and no bystanders were harmed.

Supporters, including the National Center for Police Defense (NCPD), argue that Brennand followed his training and acted to protect himself and others. They contend the charges are aimed at making an example of him in a political climate hostile to law enforcement.

Flood Rescue Before Trial

The approaching trial comes just weeks after Brennand took part in flood rescue operations in Comfort, Texas, where severe flooding destroyed homes and displaced families. Witnesses said they saw Brennand wading through debris-filled water to pull residents to safety.

NCPD stressed that even while facing serious legal jeopardy, Brennand joined flood rescue operations — a decision his supporters hail as proof of his unwavering dedication to the safety and well-being of others.

District Attorney’s Soros-Backed Support

Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales, whose office is prosecuting the case, has faced criticism from conservative groups for his ties to left-wing political organizations. Gonzales won office in 2018 with significant financial backing from the Texas Justice & Public Safety PAC, a benign-sounding political action committee linked to billionaire George Soros. Since taking office, he has received additional support from groups such as Fair and Just Prosecution and the Texas Organizing Project.

Gonzales recently announced he will not seek reelection in 2026, but that decision offers little comfort to Brennand and his family.

Broader Law Enforcement Concerns

The case has become a flashpoint in the wider debate over how police officers accused of misconduct are treated. Critics of the prosecution cite leniency toward repeat offenders in jurisdictions with progressive district attorneys, contrasting it with what they see as aggressive pursuit of cases against officers.

For many in Soros-backed jurisdictions, the fear is palpable: if they can do this to James Brennand, they can do it to anyone who steps in to protect others. That’s why all eyes now turn to October, when his trial is set to begin.
