Michael Cohen To Testify Monday In Trump Probe

-

is scheduled to testify Monday before a Manhattan grand jury.

The news comes after Cohen met with prosecutors from the Manhattan District Attorney's Office for seven hours on Friday. It is the latest sign (D) will criminally charge the former president.

Cohen developed a formidable reputation as one of Trump's closest advisors. He served as Trump's personal attorney for years until the two had a famous falling out.

Now, he's potentially the last grand jury witness ahead of an unprecedented indictment against a president of the United States.

As The New York Times reports:

Once he has testified, nearly every crucial player in the hush money matter will have appeared before the grand jury — with the exception of the porn star herself, , who may not be called to testify.

It would be highly unusual for a prosecutor in a high-profile white-collar case to go through a weekslong presentation of evidence — and question nearly every relevant witness — without intending to seek an indictment.

Mr. Cohen's testimony is the second strong indication that the district attorney, Alvin L. Bragg, will ask the grand jury to indict the former president, possibly as soon as this month. The first came when Mr. Bragg's prosecutors informed Mr. Trump's lawyers that if he wanted to testify before the grand jury, he could do so next week, people with knowledge of the matter said. Such offers almost always indicate an indictment is close.

Cohen pled guilty in 2018 to helping arrange hush money payments to two women, including Stormy Daniels, who allegedly had extramarital affairs with Trump. The former fixer acknowledged the payments broke campaign finance laws. He notably added that he made the payments at then-candidate Trump's request.

Cohen's implication of his boss was consistent with the evidence gathered by prosecutors.

Trump vigorously denies the allegations and has called the years-long investigation a “political Witch-Hunt.” In a loquacious statement he shared Thursday on , the former president insisted he never had an intimate relationship with Daniels while insulting her appearance.

Behind the scenes, Trump met with his legal team in Florida this weekend to discuss strategy.

If charged and convicted, he would face a maximum prison sentence of four years.
