MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey on Tuesday delivered an unusually profane and emotional rebuke of federal immigration authorities, telling U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to “get the f*** out of Minneapolis” after an ICE officer fatally shot a woman during a vehicle stop amid a sweeping immigration operation.

The shooting, which occurred earlier Wednesday, remains under investigation. Federal officials are adamant that the woman was shot after allegedly attempting to drive her vehicle into officers during a Department of Homeland Security-led enforcement action. Online reaction is at least mixed, with critics disputing that account and even a few supporters of immigration enforcement arguing that critical questions remain unanswered. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem described the incident as an act of “domestic terrorism.”

It immediately became a flashpoint in the broader clash between city leadership and federal immigration enforcement.

A Deadly Encounter Amid a Nationwide ICE Operation

The fatal shooting occurred during a large-scale DHS operation that deployed more than 2,000 federal agents nationwide to target illegal immigrants in multiple sanctuary jurisdictions, including Minneapolis.

According to federal statements, the ICE officer fired in self-defense after the woman allegedly attempted to use her vehicle as a weapon. No independent investigative findings have been released, and ICE body camera footage, if any exists, remains undisclosed.

Frey Rejects Federal Account, Uses Profanity at Press Conference

Speaking at a tense press conference, Frey said he personally reviewed video of the incident and dismissed DHS’ explanation outright.

“Their description of what happened is bulls***,” Frey said, accusing federal authorities of recklessly abusing their power in a needless way that led to a woman’s death.

The mayor said the shooting was emblematic of what he views as dangerous federal overreach, arguing that ICE’s presence escalated a routine encounter into a fatal confrontation.

His blunt remarks — rare for a sitting mayor — drew immediate national attention.

Rising Tensions Between Local Leaders and Federal Enforcement

Frey’s comments reflect deepening hostility between Democratic-led cities and federal immigration agencies, particularly as enforcement actions intensify.

Supporters of ICE argue officers are operating under increasingly dangerous conditions. DHS data shows:

  • 238 assaults on ICE officers between Jan. 21, 2025, and Nov. 21, 2025
  • Just 19 assaults during the same period in 2024

Federal officials cite those figures to justify their enforcement tactics and heightened officer vigilance.

Critics argue that heavy-handed raids increase the likelihood of panic, confusion, and deadly outcomes. (RELATED: Report: Federal Agency Moves Toward Major Law Enforcement Expansion)

The shooting comes amid renewed scrutiny of ICE practices nationwide. In 2025, 32 people died while in ICE custody, the highest number in more than two decades, according to advocacy groups that track detention-related deaths.

What Happens Next

Key questions remain unanswered:

  • Was the use of deadly force justified?
  • Will body camera footage be released?
  • Will the case be handled by federal prosecutors or an independent review body?

Until those questions are resolved, the Minneapolis shooting is likely to remain a political and cultural flashpoint — fueling potentially explosive debate, hopefully nothing more.

If you do not think being run over by the vehicle will not kill you just as dead as someone threatening to shoot you or knife you, you are wrong. She should have stopped for law enforcement instead of trying to run over them to avoid being stopped!
