Two National Guard members were reportedly shot Wednesday near the White House, according to early information from local authorities. Their conditions have not been confirmed.

The shooting brought a swift and heavy emergency response across the downtown area. Police, fire, EMS, and federal partners converged near the scene as investigators worked to secure the area and gather details.

Officials with the city and the Joint D.C. Task Force said they are actively monitoring the situation as it develops.

Per NBC News:

Gunfire erupted in downtown Washington, D.C., today with city police urging residents to stay clear of this “critical incident,” authorities said.

Metropolitan police officers rushed to “the scene of a shooting at 17th and I Street, NW,” according to a department statement.

“Please avoid the area,” the agency added.

Metro Transit Police officers also responded to the scene, officials said.

What We Know So Far

Officials have not said whether the Guard members were targeted or caught in a separate incident. That uncertainty has fueled concern given the location and the personnel involved.

Law enforcement has not disclosed the suspect’s identity. Authorities have also declined to comment on the severity of the injuries or the long-term outlook for the two victims.

What We Still Don’t Know

Central questions remain wide open. Investigators have not confirmed a motive, have not explained the circumstances leading up to the shooting, and have not indicated if there is an ongoing threat.

Until more facts are released, it is unclear whether this was a targeted attack, a random act of violence, or something more disturbing.
