Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin says New York City is currently harboring more than 7,100 criminal illegal aliens due to its sanctuary policies, accusing city officials of intentionally shielding dangerous offenders from federal immigration authorities.
In an interview with Fox News, McLaughlin said New York’s refusal to honor immigration detainers has allowed violent offenders to return to city streets and commit additional crimes.
“Hundreds of Murderers, Hundreds of Sexual Predators”
“Today in New York City’s jails are 7,169 criminal illegal aliens,” McLaughlin said. “We’re talking about hundreds of murderers, hundreds of sexual predators, drug traffickers, the worst of the worst.”
According to McLaughlin, sanctuary jurisdictions such as New York and Chicago are “hiding vicious criminals from deportation while leaving citizens in danger.”
“We’re seeing that these criminal illegal aliens are exiting the jails and going back onto New York or Chicago or these other sanctuary streets to re-perpetuate their crimes,” she added.
McLaughlin Targets Rep. Dan Goldman
McLaughlin singled out Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY) for contributing to the problem, accusing him and other Democratic officials of obstructing immigration enforcement.
“Dan Goldman and these other sanctuary city politicians… they should agree to hand over those individuals, honor those detainers,” she said. “Then we won’t have to flood the zone with our ICE law enforcement… because we will get these vicious criminals out of New York City’s jails.”
Goldman recently claimed that anti-ICE riots in New York City were fueled by what he described as “reckless behavior” by federal agents.
ICE Assaults Spike More Than 1,150 Percent
The Department of Homeland Security reported last week that violent assaults against ICE personnel have surged by more than 1,150 percent, coinciding with intensified deportation operations and growing unrest in sanctuary jurisdictions.
Federal officials warn that the combination of sanctuary policies and rising hostility toward ICE has created an increasingly dangerous environment for agents, local residents, and migrants alike.
Growing Conflict Over Sanctuary Policies
The clash between federal immigration authorities and New York City leaders has escalated sharply in recent months, particularly as the Trump administration intensifies efforts to identify and deport criminal non-citizens. DHS officials argue that sanctuary policies encourage repeat offenses, while city leaders say such policies foster community trust.
With more than 7,100 criminal aliens currently in New York City jails—and thousands of detainers reportedly going unhonored—the conflict is likely to intensify as federal officials push for more cooperation.
A Potential Shift In Mamdani’s Governance Plan
Trump, who sharply criticized newly elected New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani throughout the mayoral campaign and portrayed him as an uncompromising communist, struck a noticeably different tone following their first meeting. Trump was highly complimentary and optimistic after the fact, signaling that Mamdani may be more flexible on certain campaign promises, including his hardline stance against cooperating with ICE detainers. While Mamdani has not formally announced any policy shifts, Trump’s remarks have fueled speculation that the new mayor could be open to limited cooperation with federal immigration authorities in cases involving violent offenders.
