San Francisco police responded to the residence at approximately 4:12 a.m. following reports of a fire. Investigators said the suspect fled the scene on foot after throwing the device.
Security personnel extinguished the flames before firefighters arrived, limiting the damage to the exterior gate.
About an hour later, officers responded to a separate call involving a man threatening to burn down a building connected to OpenAI’s headquarters. Police identified the individual as the same suspect and took him into custody.
Authorities described the suspect as a 20-year-old man. His identity and motive have not been released.
An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the incident and said the company is cooperating with law enforcement. The company also thanked police for their response.
(AGI) benefits all of humanity. He became CEO in 2019 as the organization transitioned to a capped-profit model.
Altman oversaw the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, which sparked a surge in global interest in generative AI.
He has also been at the center of several controversies, particularly related to his leadership style, transparency, and the rapid pace of AI development. These include his brief and highly publicized removal from OpenAI, allegations of deceptive behavior, a lawsuit filed by his sister, and ongoing criticism over AI safety and ethical concerns.
Earlier this year, Altman faced backlash after comparing the energy required to train AI systems to the effort needed to raise a child — remarks some critics interpreted as equating artificial intelligence with human life.
The incident highlights increasing security concerns for high-profile technology executives as public scrutiny of artificial intelligence continues to grow.
