Report: Black Lives Matter Official Stole Millions From Organization

-

Another Black Lives Matter (BLM) official is coming under fire for his underhanded financial decisions. In a new lawsuit brought by his colleagues, Global Network Foundation leader Shalomyah Bowers is accused of stealing more than $10 million from the organization for personal use.

Bowers was hired by Marxist Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors in 2020 to help raise money. In the lawsuit filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Bowers is described as a “rogue administrator, a middle man turned usurper” who siphoned contributions to the nonprofit activist group to use as a “personal piggy bank.”

According to the Los Angeles Times:

Bowers' actions led the foundation into investigations by the Internal Revenue Service and various state attorneys general, “blazing a path of irreparable harm to BLM in less than eighteen months,” the suit claims. “While BLM leaders and movement workers were on the street risking their lives, Mr. Bowers remained in his cushy offices devising a scheme of fraud and misrepresentation to break the implied-in-fact contract between donors and BLM.”

Bowers has refuted the allegations and accused BLM of being hypocritical in its lawsuit against him.

“They would rather take the same steps of our white oppressors and utilize the criminal legal system which is propped up by white supremacy (the same system they say they want to dismantle) to solve movement disputes,” the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation's board of directors said in a joint statement.

Attorney Walter Mosley, representing the plaintiffs in the case, alleges that Bowers instead engaged in self-dealing, giving grants to his own consultant firm and charging exorbitant fees reaching eight figures.

“The lawsuit demands that they return the people's funds and stop impersonating Black Lives Matter,” Mosley said in a statement.

Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation raises funds through donations that are then distributed to Black Lives Matter Grassroots, which is “the umbrella organization for local chapters of the group.”

Black Lives Matter-Los Angeles co-founder Melina Abdullah announced the lawsuit against Bowers. Abdullah claimed that Bowers shut her and other leaders out of BLM's official social accounts in March by changing the passwords.

Despite the serious allegations of financial misconduct, Bowers says it's actually Abdullah who has committed crimes of “financial malfeasance” against BLM. He also accused Abdullah of “unprincipled decision making and a leadership style rooted in retribution and intimidation.”

BLM is no stranger to controversy regarding its finances. Last year, Cullors found herself embroiled in a financial scandal after doling out donations from BLM to friends and family members. (RELATED: BLM Co-Founder Doled Out Millions to Family and Friends)

Cullors' finances once again became the subject of public scrutiny when it was reported the BLM co-founder spent millions on multiple luxury homes in the U.S. alone before resigning from her position.

BLM's murky finances have also attracted attention from the , the issue even led to Amazon temporarily removing the organization from its charity platform as multiple states banned the foundation's activities because it did not comply with the rules.

  1. Last I heard, BLM Global Network had not filed either it’s 2020 or 2021 Information Returns at either the state or federal level. This is required by law and the former is 1 1/2 YEARS overdue. These returns are the nonprofit equivalent of a corporation or individual’s required tax return and gives basic information about the movement of money through an organization. They are also required by law to have a Public Review Information document that anyone can request to view or have a copy. If one exists, they have been playing hide and seek with it. Those who have tried to get access have been unable to get access to this information.
